UK Video Game Chart: Gears 2 beats LBP
Epic Games' action-packed sequel becomes the third-fastest selling game on Xbox 360.
Chart Track reports that Microsoft is back on top of the All Formats All Prices video game chart thanks to the release of Epic Games' Gears of War 2. The game becomes the third largest week one title on Xbox 360, behind GTA 4 and Halo 3, and the eighth largest week one on all formats.
Sony's LittleBigPlanet also got off to a good start, but was unable to match the sales of Gears 2, making its chart debut at No.4. Splitting the console exclusives are FIFA 09 at No.2 and Fallout 3 at No.3. THQ's WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2009 is a new entry at No.5.
Nintendo's Professor Layton and the Curious Village is new at No.6 on Nintendo DS, Mario Kart Wii is at No.7, Activision's Quantum of Solace is down to No.8, PES 2009 can't match the pace of FIFA and is at No.9, while Wii Fit slips to No.10.
Other new entries include Guitar Hero: World Tour at No.17, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift at No.29 and Ubisoft's EndWar at No.30.
The coming week promises to be one of the busiest in UK video game history so expect plenty of change in next week's chart. Look out for new entries from Call of Duty: World at War, Mirror's Edge, Football Manager 2009, WoW: Wrath of the Lich King and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.

As PB said, LBP is a new IP and Sony could have done more to promote it. I haven't bought it as I'm not sure about it and a demo would have been of benefit to people like me and I believe it would have boosted sales.
They did the beta, why not release that version as a demo and get potential customers playing and possibly enjoying the game?
Sales figures might not matter to gamers but they do to Sony and MS as they like to do a bit of 'our game sold more than yours'.

I'd say that it's certainly an issue if the release day is not the original date, not so much that it was a Wednesday.

I' agree with that, many games do sell more in their first week than any other week, but their continued sales can be quite strong if the game is good enough for people to continue to pick it up new a long time after release.[/quote]

Yes, I think the biggest reason for sales of GOW2 has to be the fans of the original (plus the glowing reviews) and the number of 360 owners. I'd say attach rates don't factor too much into it, it's not the quantity of titles people buy that make the difference to a single game, in fact it could have the opposite effect, with people being more picky about their game titles and only picking up a major title like LBP.

Actually, they do have a higher attach rate, so technically he's right. However, this doesn't necessarily have much bearing on a single games release.

Karlius you can't say PS3 owners don't buy many games. They buy as many as the 360 and wii.
Its a hard week to buy any game seeing as theres 3 titles out. I think all of them have done very well.

And for the throw away comment that there won't be any sales of games after week one its ridicolous. GOW and HALO3 still sell well as does GTAIV. I'll gaurantee almost every 360 console sold between now and christmas will atach a copy of GOW2 as last year with HALO3.
Its a simple fact theres an installed base of fans for GOW franchise more people wanting the game than new IP LBP. And again proves the fact that most PS3 owners don't buy that many games.

Also LBP being a more casual game is likely to hang around in the charts for several months - whereas Gears 2 is the type of game all the hardcore fans go out and buy day one, so consequently it falls down the charts more rapidly.
The promised LBP Console bundle, that isn't out in the UK yet, will also help sales. I think LBP will continue to do quite well right up to Christmas...
It's a shame Chart Track don't include hard sales numbers like NPD do in the US...

Still, it's not a case of who sells the most as long as they all sell and LBP didn't do badly. Not sure what everyone has with this obsession for one thing selling more than the other, surely the important thing is that they all make a profit to continue producing decent software?
