Modern Warfare 3 co-creator Sledgehammer Games is developing this year's Call of Duty title, Activision has announced.

Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg discussed the game's development during the publisher's Q4 calender 13 results call this evening, revealing that future Call of Duty titles had also been given expanded three-year development cycles.

Call of Duty titles have previously worked to two-year development cycles.

In an open letter on Sledgehammer's website, co-founders Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey explained that "having the honor of developing the new, next generation of Call of Duty is a developer's dream come true. All of us here at Sledgehammer Games have a shared vision to create the best work of our lives.

"The next Call of Duty represents a new era for this amazing franchise, and we look forward to sharing what we have been working on."

While Sledgehammer's game has yet to be formally revealed it is strongly believed to be a new title in the Modern Warfare series.

Sledgehammer's note, however, suggests that it could be something new altogether, possibly marking the second new sub-franchise in as many years for Call of Duty.

The extended development cycle also means that Treyarch's next Call of Duty, believed to be Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, likely won't release until 2015, and suggests that Infinity Ward could return with a sequel to Call of Duty: Ghosts in 2016.

The latest Call of Duty, Call of Duty: Ghosts, launched in November last year.

Jesus, that's a little too far.

Nah so long as they all started one year after each other then that cycle could work :P

IW: 1 2 3 1 2 3
Trey: 1 2 3 1 2 3
Sledge: 1 2 3 1 2 3

With every 3 being a release. Dunno how you got to each team having 6 years from that comment...

Are you mental - that would never happen. That would mean each studio would have 6 years to work on a game from scratch. Some of WhatISayGoes' posts have made more sense than that!

I think 3 year cycles is what the franchise needs in order to keep the quality high. No one gave a ***** about Ghosts because a) the campaign was really bad b) the multiplayer was too different and c) GTA came out 6 weeks earlier.

Perhaps this 3 year cycle means that there will be more Xbox excusive content, but I hope that it goes to making better co op modes.

I figured it would just be split between Treyarch, Sledgehammer and Infinity Ward. So still a yearly release but just 3 different dev teams working on it each given more time.

no I bet we'll see a cod every year but they will be doing staggered development so you release your game in 2014, spend three years devving and then release again in 2017 but while that happens the other two devs between them release one in 2015 and in 2016.

It's a good idea but somehow I smell trouble lol.

I can get behind any game with a 3 year cycle, hopefully we'll see a CoD game every 2 years now.

Intriguing, but will this honestly mean anything? Will we get the same gameplay, settings, design or will they actually push the series somewhere new?
