Sony Computer Entertainment America has said the improving sales of the PS3 have not come as a surprise, with a lower price and content line-up fuelling "unprecedented" consumer interest.

"It's no surprise we've seen PS3 units sold every month nearly double since October. We knew 2009 would be a turning point for the platform due to the new price and a content line-up that is fuelling unprecedented consumer and industry interest with games like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves," commented Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications at SCEA. "The consumer response has simply been overwhelming and we anticipate the high demand for PS3 to continue into the coming months as we work closely with retail to meet the demand."

He added: "The best part of PS3's story today is that 2010 will offer entirely new gaming experiences to consumers as we launch MAG, God of War III, 3D gaming, and the new motion controller this year. It’s never been a better time to be a PS3 owner."

In 2009 4.3 million PS3 units were sold, up 22 per cent on the 3.5 million units sold in 2008. 1.35 million of these units were shifted during December 2009.

The best-selling game on PS3 during the calendar year was Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 with 2.8 million units sold to date. Madden NFL 10 and Assassin's Creed II ranked second and third. PS3 exclusive Uncharted 2: Among Thieves has sold in excess of 950,000 units in the US (according to NPD).

If PS3 is turning into sh!t then surely that's pretty spectacular, no? I mean how are Sony able to transform the matter of one object into another structural form? I wonder which button activates this...

Wait, where does it say 87%? I can only see 22%... unless he's referring to month on month sales for December against November, or December 09 against December 08 :s

It would be a shame if it didn't do this well. Hopes up for this year, and if Gran Turismo PS3 should do just as well

I can't say I'm suprised at this.

The interesting thing soon will be the software sales on mutiplat games - a lot of gamers are starting to buy both consoles now that the prices have levelled out a bit more - so which platform will they be buying these games for.
