Two-player is the “magic number” for co-op, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward has said.

The last Call of Duty game, Treyarch's World at War, featured four-player campaign co-op and a bonus four-player survival Zombie Mode.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, due out worldwide on November 10, won't have a campaign co-op mode at all. Instead it will have a two-player Special Ops mode, “designed to be replayed over and over again”.

Speaking to, Robert Bowling, director of communications/community manager at Infinity Ward, explained the decision, saying it didn't want to “ruin the story by cramming co-op into it”.

He said: “We don’t do co-op in our story because we’re crafting a very specific experience and we don’t want to ruin that by cramming co-op into it. We take the moments that work really well with co-op, we bring them out and we put them in Special Ops.”

“Story’s all about pacing,” he added. “Sometimes moments get toned down because they don’t fit with the pacing of the experience you’re trying to deliver. There (in Special Ops) it’s all about fun. It’s about playing over and over again, getting a better time – you’ll have a time at the end of it – it’s about challenging a friend going in on co-op and trying to beat it on veteran.”

When asked why Special Ops was limited to two players, not four, Bowling replied: “Two player seemed to be the magic number for co-op. That’s when it stayed really fun and intense without becoming a clusterf**k of things. We just found that two-players was the most fun.”

If the CoD series wasn't so amazing it would bother me whenever there's co-op it's usually to help out a sucky game but CoD6 wont need that cant wait till it comes out

So now we'll have 2 people running from a large enclosed area to a smaller enclosed area. Activision, you truly are developing geniuses.

He's being a little bit crafty with his spin, here. If the missions are designed to make use of 2 players, then all is good. If the missions are designed to need 4 players, but you have to do them with 2, things are bad. If the missions are designed for 1, and you have 2, it's also bad. The 'magic number' is the number that you built it for in the first place!

I was hoping they may go the route of GRAW2 and allow 16 player Co-op. That's more of a magical number!

I don't think the 2 is the magic co-op number. I'm not sure about you guys but I usually have at least 4 people online and always forced (not a problem) to play multiplayer online but sometimes (like in CoDWaW zombie mode) we are able to venture off and still have fun without splitting up the group.

I totally understand if they would not have more than 4 but seriously, 2? come on.

would of liked a campaign co-op but 2-player something is better than nothing, anyways, most ppl who get this will jump straight on MP and rack up the XP
