On Tuesday night the GAME British Academy Video Games Awards took place at the London Hilton on Park Lane, with Activision's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Nintendo's Super Mario Galaxy leaving with the top awards.

Call of Duty 4 won for Gameplay, Story & Character and also took home the GAME Award of 2008, voted for by a record 60,000 gamers. This year's Best Game went to Super Mario Galaxy which was up against Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Fable II, Fallout 3, Grand Theft Auto IV and Rock Band.

Steven Spielberg claimed his third BAFTA - his first for a game - as Boom Blox won in the Casual category. EA's Dead Space won in the Use of Audio and Original Score categories, LittleBigPlanet claimed the Artistic Achievement BAFTA and Spore won for Technical Achievement.

Other winners included Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution (Strategy), Race Driver: GRID (Sport), Left 4 Dead (Multiplayer), Fable II (Action and Adventure) and Professor Layton (Handheld).

The evening also saw Jonathan Ross present the Academy's highest honour, the Fellowship, to Atari founder Nolan Bushnell. Credited by many for kick-starting the video games revolution, Bushnell's Pong was the first video game to achieve widespread popularity in the arcade and the home.
