2K Games has announced that well established video game developer Digital Extremes will be assisting on development of the PS3 version of BioShock. The studio will be working alongside 2K Marin, 2K Boston and 2K Australia.

"By partnering with Digital Extremes, 2K Games is delivering a fully optimized experience that takes advantage of the PlayStation 3 system hardware," said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. "Bringing Digital Extremes on board allows us to continue to deliver the best experience possible to our fans."

Digital Extremes is perhaps most well known as the co-creator of Epic's Unreal franchise, but more recently the studio released Dark Sector, a third-person action game for Xbox 360 and PS3, utilising an in-house engine which rivalled Epic's own Unreal Engine 3.

"When 2K approached us to assist with development on BioShock for the PlayStation 3 system, it was a no-brainer," said James Schmalz, CEO and founder of Digital Extremes. "You really can't ask for a more exciting, technically impressive world to work in than Rapture, and the incredible knowledge and talent between the 2K studios and our team at Digital Extremes is unprecedented. The collaboration on this project will make the PlayStation 3 system sing with Big Daddy goodness and Little Sister 'thank you's'."

BioShock will arrive on the PlayStation 3 in October and is reported to include numerous additions over the original Xbox 360 and PC release.

Would Bioshock be the first game to use some what of the potential the PS3 has??? I hope so, I loved the first Bioshock on the 360. And Bioshock coming to Station 3, then I might just have to buy it on the Station 3.
