Microsoft is gearing up to announce the successor to the Xbox 360 at E3 2012, and Crytek is already developing a new TimeSplitters game for the next generation of consoles, VideoGamer.com can reveal.

Specifications for the new machine have not been finalised, but Crytek is using Microsoft's DirectX 11 as the current basis for next-generation development. Tessellation, multithreaded rendering, and compute shaders are the three headlining features for DirectX 11.

The Crysis 2 developer says that Microsoft will announce the existence of a new Xbox within the next 12 months, hinting that an E3 2012 reveal is likely. Crytek believes that Microsoft will announce and launch its new machine ahead of rival Sony, though the developer is also investing resources into next-generation PlayStation development.

The information was detailed to VideoGamer.com by a high-ranking industry source at Crytek, who stated that TimeSplitters 4 is currently being demonstrated internally, is being built with CryEngine 3, and was being shown privately in video form at E3 2011.

Crytek UK, who produced the other three games in the series as Free Radical, is still handling the development.

Both Microsoft and Crytek declined to comment.

The source reports that the graphics on TimeSplitters 4 are noticeably improved over current generation technology, with the DX11 tessellation effects allegedly having a huge impact on the visuals. Crytek believes that the game - and CryEngine 3 itself - will be seen as the cornerstone of next-generation development.

Crytek has invested heavily in DirectX 11 development primarily to focus on the new consoles, with the upcoming DX11 patch for the PC version of Crysis 2 being used internally as a benchmark of anticipated hardware trends.

As for the game itself, the new TimeSplitters is reported to focus on the series' branching paths and exploratory nature, with sandbox-style gameplay elements a big priority. The current goal is for levels to feature multiple routes that lead to the same overall conclusion.

Speculation about TimeSplitters 4 has been running since 2007. Since its initial announcement the game was even pegged to be a Wii-exclusive before languishing in development hell and being put on hiatus in 2009.

What does this mean for Halo 4, then, which was stated as an Xbox 360 game during its E3 2011 reveal?

Crytek has also recently announced that the CryEngine will support Nintendo's upcoming Wii U hardware. "Crytek's support for Wii U is definitely going to happen," said CEO Cevat Yerli.

Younger gamers might not be aware of the TimeSplitters series. 2005's TimeSplitters: Future Perfect was the last game in the franchise, and 2000's TimeSplitters was a well-received PS2 launch title, but the highlight of the series is undeniably 2002's TimeSplitters 2.

Crytek snapped up Free Radical in 2009 after the studio was forced into administration following the lacklustre critical and commercial performance of its PS3-exclusive shooter Haze. The Nottingham-based studio was rebranded as Crytek UK.

Crytek UK's last job was to handle the multiplayer portion of Crysis 2. "Whether it has enough mettle to compete in the long-term is another question - and one that will be tested over the coming months - but from this initial glance it certainly seems like there's enough in Crysis 2's multiplayer to at least tide people over until the autumn," I wrote in VideoGamer.com's 9/10 Crysis 2 review.

I usually copy long posts to the clipboard, but it's still pretty annoying for short messages like this to just disappear. Sometimes they disappear when switching to advanced mode as well.

If by 'database issue' you mean typing a comment in here and it deleting, then I would recommend keeping text edit, or something similar open while you blog. Write your messages in that, then copy/paste. Its a tough lesson I have learned over the years.

This database issue is a tad annoying. Just wrote load and I lost it :(

A new console by the end of 2013 sounds alright to me, and while having beefier graphics doesn't mean a better gaming experience it is still exciting to see how MS can push themselves.

Better GPUs do not just mean better graphics. For a start they take some pressure off the CPU, allowing even more powerful processing for things like better AI, physics and more control over the game world. Being able to push more polygons around is important not just for the extra detail, but for more fluid movement (whether realistic or cartoon style graphics are used).

It's all down to how developers use it though.

I shall sit on the fence and observe the speculation when to see the new console arrive. This definitely makes next years E3 that ever so more exciting, and of course the days coming up to the big event once again with more news about it.

Love Timesplitters and to know that Timesplitters 4 is being developed is very reassuring!

from a series of "clever" deductions, I half agree with you.

The Source Says that the consoles would be officially announced in the next 12 months. Lets work on it being announced at E3 next year and run things through.

So, it's June 2012 and we have just seen the first signs of the new consoles. At a guess, they will launch these around 10-14 months after announcement (average announcement to launch time). That gives us a launch of around April-August 2013 for the latest machine (for it to come out on both systems at the same time).

The game development times fit with that. We can see a game being developed, properly, in around 18 months. Lets say that it takes 2 years for Crytek to be happy with the game, after implementing an old, by then, engine on completely new architecture. As we know about it now, we have to give it 2 years from this month. so basically launching around June 2013, slap bang in the middle of the dates I said earlier.

Seems quite reasonable, to me.

They probably just mean they're developing a cross-platform engine.

I hope Microsoft don't rush Xbox 3 to the market just because Nintendo will be there already. I don't think they can hope to target 2012, though, so Fall 2013 is likely. I might be ready for another Xbox by then, but I doubt small/medium publishers will be.

E3 2011 just finished and we've got E3 2012 rumours already.

The oddest part of this is the 'fact' they're investing into the PS4. I don't believe we'll be seeing that until at least 2014, developing a game for it now just seems weird.

Very cool news. DirectX 11 adds a whole heap of new shaders and effects. It's just a shame that the major console race seems to be about graphics horse power. Look at PC rigs, they have more number crunching power than you could possibly need, but are the games any better for it? In this regard, although I'm not a huge fan of theirs, Nintendo are doing the right thing. Trying to innovate new ways for us to play games. Crytek are a developer constantly pushing forward graphics. But unfortunately, when it comes to gameplay, they produce tried and tested software. I feel that we're just going to see more and more sequels with bigger explosions and more physics.

Personally, I now think that the real videogame race is between things like the 3DS, Vita, iPhone/Pad and The Wii U. They may not be playing Modern Warfare 3, but they could offer us the truly great experiences in the next few years.
