God of War 2 was one of the last truly great first-party PS2 exclusives, arriving at a time when many gamers were already thinking about the upcoming PlayStation 3. Why it was a PS2 and not a PS3 launch title crossed everyone's mind at the time, so why did it remain on the PS2?

Speaking to Game Informer, Sony Computer Entertainment senior vice president Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed that he faced a bit of a battle to keep the highly anticipated sequel on the PS2.

“We had a lot of debates about it, actually. I always firmly stood by keeping it on PS2. Many people, including marketing, suggested that maybe it should be moved to PS3," he told Game Informer.

“I saw an opportunity for the Santa Monica team to complete their vision for the second game on a platform they totally understood. That was my argument and the company and team supported it. I’m very happy with the result. So to your question, I have never regretted the fact that we released God of War II on PS2.”

God of War 3 is the first game in the series to be developed for Sony's latest console, but God of War and its sequel have been released with high resolution visuals on the PS3. The two-game bundle is available in North America, while European gamers will have to buy the complete God of War box set (the two PS2 games and God of War 3) to get hold of the graphically enhanced titles.

God of War 3 currently has no confirmed release date, but it's expected on March 19.

The only change I'd really like to see to the controls would be control over the camera - but apart fromk that GoW 2 is fantastic - even now!

I'm kinda on the fence about this because, God of War II was pretty damn good on PS2 and as a result probably would have been better on PS3.

But I disagree with this decision because, so far we have only seen God of War on the PS2 and not on a 7th gen console, so this will give God of War III pretty biased reception, especially seeing as most people will be comparing it to other God of War's. Although, after playing the E3 demo, I was very impressed with it, and sticks with the original God of War formula, making for an exciting and blood thirsty experience.
