PC gamers utilising a Watch Dogs mod, which claims to reactivate graphical settings featured in the game's E3 2012 demo, are doing so at the risk of hurting their enjoyment of the game, Ubisoft has warned.

"The dev team is completely dedicated to getting the most out of each platform, so the notion that we would actively downgrade quality is contrary to everything we’ve set out to achieve," reads an update on the game's official website. "We test and optimise our games for each platform on which they’re released, striving for the best possible quality.

"The PC version does indeed contain some old, unused render settings that were deactivated for a variety of reasons, including possible impacts on visual fidelity, stability, performance and overall gameplay quality."

The statement continues: "Modders are usually creative and passionate players, and while we appreciate their enthusiasm, the mod in question (which uses those old settings) subjectively enhances the game’s visual fidelity in certain situations but also can have various negative impacts. Those could range from performance issues, to difficulty in reading the environment in order to appreciate the gameplay, to potentially making the game less enjoyable or even unstable."

If you're using the mod let us know about your experience in the comments below.

Watching all the teen conspiracy theorists try to turn this into some secret attempt to downplay PC gaming (directed in their head by Tony Scott no doubt) is genuinely hilarious.

Seriously guys, what possible incentive would Ubisoft have for doing this on purpose? I know you have this giant war between consoles and PCs built up in your head, but Ubisoft doesn't care! If the wanted to hurt PC gaming, they just wouldn't have made the game and made passive aggressive comments about them like they do about Nintendo.

And just because you don't have problems using the mod doesn't meant that there aren't any. It's why developing for the PC is so difficult and takes longer. There are hundreds of different configurations, all with their own idiosyncrasies. So they have to optimize for the balance that allows the most people to have the best experience.

I don't see the issue here. The developers optimised the game to get the best performance without any glitches and are saying that, yes, there are unused graphical settings that they turned off because they found bugs in testing (hence the optimisation).

They're not banning anything, they're just sensibly telling people that the mod MIGHT break the game, which they've probably had the experience of themselves.

This, after Digital Foundry showed that the finished game was actually pretty near to the original E3 demo anyway, but because they used certain weather and time conditions.

Now this is a hole that Ubi are going to struggle getting out of - if this news story takes off that is.
