Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium is no longer being developed as an MMO and will now be a single-player and online multiplayer title featuring digital content, THQ has announced.

President and CEO of THQ Brian Farrell explains the change in game-type is due to the current market and economy within the industry.

"As previously announced, we have been actively looking for a business partner for the game as an MMO. However, based on changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO, we believe the right direction for us is to shift the title from an MMO to a premium experience with single and multiplayer gameplay, robust digital content and community features."

As a result of this shift, development teams at Vigil Games and Relic Entertainment will be reduced by 79 full-time employees and 39 employees, respectively.

The title was originally announced in 2007, being developed by Vigil Games with help from Relic to move the process along. It is currently scheduled to release March 13 2013.

I am disappoint.

This basically boils down to them bottling it, in not so many words. But did they have to do it with 40K? *sigh* will we EVER get our fabled 40k MMO? At least they did it at this stage a mere 2-3 years into R&D (if you dont count the previous developers and all the hand overs)

So this means yet another Space Marine centric FPS hybrid? (snore) I hope they do it like Mass Effect, there are way too many cool abilities and classes to dumb it down to a simple FPS. Plus thats already been done recently, mixed results, overall success? Subdued to say the least.

For once lets actually get a glimpse of the world, the universe. there's 25+ years of Games Workshop lore, countless books and adaptations. And yet all we ever see in 40k games are Orks and their pesky Waaaagh. Sometimes with the perils of Chaos and Tyranids thrown in as a side plot. What we need is an event that shapes the world for all the races, something like a second coming. Gods return, the dead arises. Needs to be massive and epic in scale.
