Mass Effect 3 has become the biggest No.1 of 2012, amassing more sales than the previous four No.1 games so far: SSX, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, UFC Undisputed 3 and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

In fact, Mass Effect 3's week one sales are more than the combined week one total for the previous two games in the trilogy. However, the third game is the first in the series to release simultaneously on three platforms.

And it was Xbox 360, the original home of Mass Effect, which took the lion's share of sales, accounting for a huge 73 per cent when combining regular and N7 editions. PS3 managed 14 per cent.

SSX is shunted down a place to No.2 with a 49 per cent drop off, but managed to hold off Street Fighter X Tekken which is new at No.3. EA claims its third game in the Top 5 with FIFA 12 at No.4, followed by Mario Party 9 at No.5, up eight per cent week on week.

The Sims 3: Showtime is new at No.6 and the only other new title to grace the Top 40 is Sony's PS Vita shooter Unit 13 at No.15.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

After a disappointing few months for triple-A releases it's great to see a real hit for EA in the shape of Mass Effect 3, proving that the right game still has a big audience.

Other new releases, however, failed to ignite consumer interest, with MGS Snake Eater 3D failing to chart inside the All Formats Top 40, instead settling for No.4 in the 3DS chart. Capcom's Asura's Wrath - seemingly sent to die in the UK - also bombed, missing the All Formats Top 40 and charting at No.30 in the Xbox 360 chart.

Will Friday's new releases perform any better? EA will be hoping for big things from FIFA Street, which in our eyes can be the only real contender to Mass Effect 3's crown. Sony's Twisted Metal could sneak a Top 10 for Sony, but the franchise has never been as well loved in the UK as it is state side. SEGA's zombie-inspired Yakuza Dead Souls is our bet for the title most likely title to miss out.

Oh really? I thought they weren't getting any at all? I did wonder why my local still had SSX ads outside. Ho hum.

Actually, SSX is one of the few things GAME have managed to get stocks of, although my local Gamestation only got in enough copies on 360 to cover pre-orders. But, seeing ANY new titles retaining a presence up the top end of the charts is good news overall. Mario Party 9 is doing remarkable well in this respect.

Good to see SSX still up there, especially without a presence at GAME.

I like to think that so many people bought Mass Effect 3 on Xbox 360 because PS3 doesn't offer the full experience of the series. I can't imagine playing Mass Effect 3 without having played Mass Effect.
