Mindscape has announced The Ship, a first-person maritime gaming experience set onboard a fleet of 1930s steam liners.
What began as a Half-Life mod has turned into a fully fledged single and multiplayer game in its own right. Developed by Edinburgh-based Outerlight, The Boat is a blend of first-person gameplay, management (food, sleep, and social interaction), exploration, investigation, survival, stealth, intrigue and even murder.
The game will feature a single-player 'Arcade' mode, plus the online modes, Hunt, Elimination, Deathmatch and Duel. The game revolves around the Hunt concept, in which each player is given the name of another contestant onboard, and must hunt them down and kill them with whatever weapon comes to hand. The winner is determined in a number of ways depending on which game mode is being played.
Each ship in the fleet has its own secrets to be discovered, including hidden rooms, passages, tunnels, weapons, traps, and special ways of murdering the player's target. All this is brought to life using Valve's Source Engine, so expect plenty of spit and polish to be applied to the game's visuals.
The concept certainly sounds intriguing, promising a murder-mystery survival game for both offline and online play. The game will be on show at E3, and is currently scheduled for release in September.
