Square Enix has blamed 2008 JRPG The Last Remnant's horrible framerate problems on misuse of the Unreal Engine.

The Last Remnant, the first Square Enix game to use the Unreal Engine, was the second game in Microsoft's three-pronged assault on the Japanese market.

It was released exclusively on the Xbox 360 in November 2008, a move Microsoft hoped would result in improved sales of its console in Japan.

Unfortunately, the game failed to live up to its early promise, and suffered from crippling framerate issues.

Speaking to Gamasutra, Square Enix's chief technology officer Julien Merceron said: "One of the traps with middleware (like Unreal) is that some game teams believe that, because they got this middleware, maybe they need less programmers on their team, or maybe they don't need that many skilled programmers."

The Last Remnant was originally announced for the PS3 as well as the 360 and PC, but in June last year it was rumoured the PS3 version had been canned following poor sales.
