Since going free-to-play, Team Fortress 2 has seen a considerable boost in players, ending Counter Strike's reign as the most played game on Steam.

Today's figures show Valve's team-based shooter enjoying 97,917 concurrent users. Counter Strike has subsequently slipped to second place, losing a small percentage of its players in the process.

Team Fortress 2 became completely free to play last Friday, with Valve using micro-transactions as the solitary method of monetising the game.

Going free-to-play was a bold move from Valve, but the figures seem to suggest it paid off. The big question is: Will this increase in users translate into increased revenue for Valve?

Didn't EA also have Battlefield: Heroes that was F2P? I think the novelty of that game soon worn off, but I feel TF2 will have that special spark for a while. I've always thought TF2 had somewhat a special 'community' that people play the game religiously, knowing the game inside out.
