Syndicate, the Starbreeze developed FPS which delivered the retro franchise to a whole new audience earlier this year, failed to live up to sales targets in part because of the problems in the retail space and GAME's collapse, the studio's CEO Michael Nermark told GamesIndustry.

"There's so many reasons why a game succeeds or fails from a commercial point-of-view," said Nermark.

"We released the game about a month or more ago, and we're doing our post-mortem right now: what did we do right, what did we do wrong, and of course we will look at the commercial side as well.

"The numbers are not as high as we would like, and I think if you asked anyone they would say the same thing about any game they made.

"But [Syndicate] was released in the midst of GAME going under; the retail space is hurting, and I think that hurt us because we were such a retail product."

The game charted at No.7 and spent only three weeks inside the Top 40.

EA titles have this week returned to GAME stores. Analysis

Syndicate released in the UK on February 24, a month before GAME entered administration and was stocked during the game's launch period. However, stock replenishment at the high street retailer was an issue as GAME's troubles worsened.

I thought it was okay but I sure as ***** wouldn't have paid money for it.

Alright, I probably would have paid £17.99 for it.

It was, trust me, i had it for 2 weeks, the story was a mess, the multiplayer was awful. Got rid of it for a GOOD remake (OoT 3DS) and haven't looked back.

Bingo. What Bloodstorm said. The creators should get on Kickstarter and do a decent remake without fk-ing it up as a FPS. They have there place, but I'm so sick of the classics being remade in this style like there aren't enough on the market already. This game felt nothing like the original, yet it had nothing new to offer either.

I don't know about that, but what I do know is that there is nothing that I have seen from or about the game that says that I need to buy it. NO adverts, no reviews, no word-of-mouth, and even the demo did nothing but show me yet a-sodding-nother generic FPS, and certainly not one worthy of living up to the franchise. This looks to me like yet a-sodding-nother stupid publisher thinking that making a FPS game and just releasing it is enough to guarantee a passport to millionaireville.
