BioWare and LucasArts have finally confirmed the worst kept secret in gaming - a Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic MMO is in development.

Titled Star Wars: The Old Republic, the "story-driven" online game is mentioned for PC only, and is set 300 years after the end of KotOR 2, and thousands of years before Darth Vader and anyone else from the films shows up.

Players will be able to play as a Jedi, Sith or "a variety of other classic Star Wars roles", and will "determine their path down the light or dark side of the Force".

Supplementing the traditional player grouping MMO format, it looks like you'll also have a KotOR-esque party of sorts to play around with, too. You'll be able to befriend "courageous companions" who will fight at your side or possibly betray you, based on your actions.

There's no word on a release date, subscription model or the chance of the game coming to consoles as of yet, but we do have a six hot off the press screenshots right here.

Said Dr. Greg Zeschuk, co-founder and vice president development operations, BioWare and vice president, EA: "Star Wars: The Old Republic is set roughly 300 years after the events of Knights of the Old Republic, a timeframe that is completely unexplored in the lore. BioWare has been able to add to the Star Wars history in developing the game's story and has created an overarching narrative that players can enjoy, regardless of their play style. Our goal is to offer players an emotionally rewarding experience that combines the traditional elements of MMO gameplay with innovations in story and character development."

I too am disapointed, I was hoping for a kotor3. To speculate an answer to Revan, SW gallaxies is getting old and they are probably losing players. They need some fresh games to get people back online, oh and on the month subsript fee. I myself have never paid a fee to play online and I have had fun so far. I just can't justify buying the game, which will probably be in the $50-60 range, and then continue to pay to play, thus the game becoming totally worthless when you don't pay. They havent given all the details yet, so heres to hoping for a single player side!

I'm very disapointed in this press release, why won't LucasArts listen to their gaming fans. I waited so long and what happen with KOTOR 3? KOTOR wasn't meant for an online game, when will we get a canon story continued from the Sith Lords? I don't even plan on paying just to play online. That's why we have Star Wars Galaxies for.

The only thing I disagree with so far (from reading and seeing the screen shots) the graphics look somewhat cartoon-ish, hopefully they can polish up the character graphics to make them look more human than cartoon, and second with both factions republic/sith, will there also be a third faction "neutral" and with this faction setup will it be like another WoW where you cant group/talk ect. with the opposing faction? I just dont like the Idea of having to choose or being forced to choose who to align yourself with, though most people will, some may wish to stay neutral. Also with them announcing a class system, It may not be as deep as galaxies was, (with some 32 different professions/classes) it was nice to have a very wide variety vs another WoW with 9classes and 3 "specs" with most people playing a class are very close to the same spec, A nice variety would be exellent and set the game apart. Though my main issue is the fact it looks a bit cartoon-ish. Other wise Looking forward to the game.

About time... I never could work out why SOE never made the leap of thought to set set a Star Wars MMO outside of the movie era. Anyways, here's hoping I can skate into the Beta when the opportunity arises...
