Star Wars Galaxies closes its doors.

Star Wars Galaxies, Sony Online Entertainment's long-running MMO, has closed its servers.

Today the subscription-based MMO closed for good after eight years, instigated by problems regarding financial sustainability and the impending presence of Star Wars: The Old Republic, of which they share a brand.

SOE had previously stated a free-to-play system which may have kept the game afloat simply could not be implemented.

Star Wars Galaxies began in 2003, keeping with it a core audience of fans since its release.
