I'm really enjoying Tomb Raider, but there's something nagging at me, saying it could have been a whole lot better. I think it's about pacing and combat. To me the change from innocent Lara to killer Lara was rushed, and when she starts killing she dispatches far too many people. This was so close to being a really gritty experience, but it quickly descends into a "shoot all the dudes" third-person action adventure. It's fun, looks brilliant, and will likely end up as a contender for one of the best games of the year, but I wish the dev team had been a bit braver.

David Scammell, Deputy News Editor - Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, Nintendo DS

ghosttrick570 -

I thought I'd found one of gaming's greatest characters in Missile, Ghost Trick's heroic Pomeranian pooch. But then I was introduced to the Chicken Kitchen's singing chef, and the flirtatious 'perfumed woman', and the flamboyant police inspector... The list goes on.

There are so many fantastic characters in Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, each distinctly unique and bursting with their own quirks, that even minor characters tend to have more life in them than most leads. The first two chapters are free on iOS, too, so if you're in the mood for an absorbing narrative-led puzzle adventure this weekend, definitely give it a try.

Steve Burns, Reviews and Features Editor - BioShock: Infinite, Xbox 360, PS3, and PC

BioShock Infinite has taken up all of my time this week, which is a shame because I'm not allowed to talk about it until Monday. All I can say is that yes, it is a shooting game. Insightful!

Matt Lees, Video Production Editor - StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, PC

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm screenshot

The lion-shaped pride that resides in my heart has taken a bit of a beating this week when I realised that I'll probably never be any good at StarCraft II. After months of practicing on DOTA 2 I'd sort of hoped that some of the skills would transfer over, but while the former relies on savvy knowledge a lot of StarCraft II is all about raw ability and skill. Juggling base management while sending armies into battles is far more than my monkey brain can handle, so I've already started resorting to rushing foes early in the hope of securing an early win.

My favourite unit in Heart of the Swarm undoubtedly remains the mighty Widow Mine - they burrow underground out of sight, and fire missiles at stuff that moves nearby above the surface. The best moment so far? A online 3v3 game in which one Protoss player simply stopped mining for almost four minutes simply because I'd spiked his base with a couple of Widow Mines. Those of you who've played SC2 online will know how things panned out for that guy. GG, chaps.

People have been giving SimCity a hard time since its launch, and rightfully so for the inexcusable server issues which left most people unable to even play it for over a week, but you know what? I actually really like this game.

Booting up Origin just now and apparently I've played 76 hours. Granted, a lot of that is from letting the game run overnight while my industrial city raked in 25 million a day, but still I've played a lot. When you finally get a city like this you start to feel indestructible. I've got so much money now that I could literally bulldoze the entire plot and rebuild 10 times over with absolutely no issues. I've whittled down the once thriving population to the bare minimum required to keep my consumer electronics factories running because, quite frankly, the residential zones were taking up valuable industrial space. Beside, they can all go live in my wonderful residential utopia elsewhere in the region! A sprawling 250,000 population city with all the amenities they could possibly hope for! All fuelled by a clean nuclear power plant which no one complained about until an earthquake destroyed it...

Now that city is the digital equivalent of Chernobyl, completely uninhabitable due to the entire area festering with ground pollution. Ah well, I guess I'll just go start a new region...

Looks like a pretty pricey bit of gear! Let me know what you need it for exactly, and I might be able to point you towards something a bit cheaper. My Samson GoMic does the trick for most stuff I do outside of work, tbh.

And @BC_Animus Thanks for the information, I'll probably pick it up at some point then! And regarding the podcast I may do as a hobby, I was going to go out and buy quite a bit of equipment (Good USB Microphone, shock mount, pop filter, stand etc...) but Blue Microphones are releasing a product called 'Nessie' (http://bluemic.com/nessie/) which includes an inbuilt pop filter and shock mount. Early previews are positive, so I'm going to wait until it's release and read/watch some reviews as this maybe a good quality microphone that can get me started.

Just picked up Empire: Total War earlier on sale. I haven't played any sort of RTT/RTS since Age of Mythology so I'm really enjoying the learning curve. I'm aiming to get back into RTS games ready for Total War: Rome II and besides it makes a good time passer until Bioshock: Infinite comes out on Tuesday.

They've always done it, mate. If you buy a game and simply don't like it, then they'll happily exchange it for another within 24 hours. Their second hand prices beat everywhere else, their trade-in values are usually better and they have a 24 hour swap policy. The only negative is the smell in most of their shops :P

I'm happy to buy new titles. But when buying second hand I always buy from CEX as most the other stores are a few quid more expensive. Unbelievably, I live in London and there's currently only ONE place to buy new videogames on release here; That's GAME in the bottom floor of Hamley's toy shop. I refuse to pay the extra few quid they put on titles. It's REALLY annoying not having a decent store to wander around and choose games from, so CEX gets most of my trade these days. If an indie could survive in London, then I would shop there. Even if they cost the same as GAME.

What conditions do they have with this 24 hour exchange? Sounds like they're very generous, and potentially a bit daft!

Thanks Tom.

Ill be buying Luigis Mansion anyway. Just wanted a game for this weeks commute. I bought Layton from CEX and they offer a 24hour exchange that I'm planning on taking advantage of. I'm not usually a tennis fan, but if somebody had recommended it I may have tried. NSMB2 it is ;)

I'd go with Mario Bros. 2, but that's because I couldn't get on with Kid Icarus' controls and am not a huge fan of Mario Tennis. If you can wait, I'd trade towards Luigi's Mansion 2 pre-order.

I'm kinda bumping this (sorry). But, I'm hoping somebody in the community is able to answer my question. I'm heading into town in about an hour to trade Layton in and wondered if any of you had played New Super Mario Bros 2, Kid Icarus, or Mario Tennis (3DS). Are any of them worth my time?

I finished Castlevania: Mirror of Fate this morning. Loved it and finished with 90%. It's definitely my kinda game. I've already started again. It's a wonderfully oldskool platformer freshened up with some great graphics and nuskool mechanics. It's gonna get a 10 from me. I want more of this from the 3DS and am happy to pay full price each time :)

I picked up Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask today. I've played it for about an hour and a half, and am not enjoying it very much. The style and puzzles are great, but most of my time is spent reading conversations. I would rather be doing, than watching. Tomorrow I'll be returning it and picking up New Super Mario Bros 2.

Anybody got any experience of Kid Icarus, or Mario Tennis? Worth my time (and money)?

Bought my son Sonic & Allstars Racing Transformed and ended up enjoying it more myself! Best fun-centric racing game since Diddy Kong/F-Zero GX on N64 as far as i'm concerned! I would even go so far as to call it a masterpiece!

Started to play Batman: Arkham City again, i'm more playing out of duty for the franchise though I think as it's a rental game and I just want to get it finished so i can send it back and get something else.

Not played much Guild Wars lately, mainly because I haven't felt like I've had the time to commit to it. Even though I could have quite easily. Just needed a break from it I think, a change is as good as a rest they say :)

Wow Splice was short. Just over 2 hours and the main games finished. Finishing the main game unlocked epilogue puzzles at least, but blah with no sleep and no caffinee in me think I'm gonna give those a miss for now. Hmmm two hours until work... should I bother with sleep I wonder?

Completed Trine 2, Kane and Lynch 2 and Gears of War Judgement (Thanks VG!) this week.
DLC I managed to do part 2 of the Washington DLC for Assassin's Creed 3 called The Betrayal and it was pants.
Ubi-Soft still release their content full of bugs and with incomplete mecahanics while they make the next game at the same time in the series.
It didn't surprise me that they were making 4 while making 3 as they did the same thing with Revelations.
Such a shame a good franchise has now gone downhill and people saying the sailing is the best bit of the game just validates my point further as it's easy, boring and couldn't be more unrealistic from my experince of sailing.
It's like comparing Mario Kart to Forza.

God of War Ascension this morning. Fantastic as always. Sniper Ghost Warrior 2... Not to bad, but boring. Multiplayer is actually fun! May just keep it for that really.

@MrRevelation Thomas Was Alone was good. Very short and easy, but its got a lot of charm and personality, well worth playing, especially if you can get it for cheap. Anyways if you do end up doing that podcast PM me, I'll check it out.

As for what I've been playing... according to Raptr I spent about 34 hours on Kingdoms of Amular: Reckoning this past week, which btw I finally finished today. It bored me to tears, but I've spent nearly 80 hours on that game so I guess it must have something going for it.

Right now I'm playing through the puzzler Splice - simplistic but semi-challenging, enjoying it but probably not worth getting at full price. I'm also planning on jumping back onto the PS3 and spending more time with Final Fantasy XIII.
