Previously the Alexander expansion had only been available via digital download, or as part of the Total War: Eras compilation. The retail boxed version now gives gamers without broadband access the option to nip down the shops and bag a copy.

"Releasing Alexander via digital download proved to be a great experience for The Creative Assembly and SEGA as we learnt a phenomenal amount about how digital distribution works," commented Mike Simpson, Studio Director at Creative Assembly. "However we also learnt that there are a huge number of Total War fans itching to play Alexander but without the means to successfully download it. Therefore we've listened and learned and so are extending the opportunity for all Total War fans to get their hands on Alexander via a more traditional route."

The Alexander expansion features all-new content and gameplay, all based around a new campaign map spanning Alexander's unification of Greece and his conquest of the Persian Empire. The expansion also includes six historical battles based on Alexander's victories over the Greek, Persian, and Indian forces.

Rome: Total War Alexander will be in stores across Europe and North America from September 1.
