With the release of EA's two-player co-operative shoot fest Army of Two: The 40th Day right around the corner, we thought we'd indulge in a bit of co-op action ourselves (no, not like that). The result? The Top 10 Co-op Games of all Time. If you're after a video game to play with your mate, whether it's on the couch or online, then we've got you covered. Now, who's got our six?

10. Resident Evil 5 - Xbox 360, PS3, PC

Resi 5 might have divided long-term fans of the franchise, and indeed action gamers in general, but there's one thing upon which we can all agree: it worked brilliantly in co-op. When played alone, the delectable Sheva largely acts as an unusually attractive donkey. AI Sheva has no concept of ammo conservation, so most players just give her a cattle prod and force her to carry all their unloaded weapons. But when she's being controlled by a human being, ideally a good friend, the game suddenly takes on a new dimension. The level designs reveal a new layer of subtlety, and before you know it you'll be using proper two-man tactics. And as an added bonus, you're spared the tedium of Chris Redfield shouting "Sheva! Sheva! SHEVA!" over and over and over again.

9. Halo 3: ODST - Xbox 360

The Halo series has always been pretty good for co-op banter, but the recent ODST arguably represents the best effort so far in terms of sociable gaming. In addition to full co-op support for the campaign, there's also Firefight mode - a wave-based challenge that more or less squeezes Gears of War 2's Horde mode into the classic Master Chief mould - even if the man himself is nowhere to be found. We might have seen Firefight's basic structure before, but there's still something highly addictive about the way the difficulty slowly ramps up, making life increasingly painful for your hard-bitten shock troopers.

Top 10 Co-Op games of all time? Were you born in 2008? WTF. This list is a total failure.

I'd have to say this generation of games (or at least the last 10 years) my picks would have to go to...

Borderlands - The story is merely a thinly veiled excuse to play awesome 4 player co-op, do medial tasks but with awesome firepower and fancy abilities. For me, that's a winner.

Call of Duty: World at War - MW2's spec-ops is fun but I prefer the feeling of just trying to survive Nazi zombies by blowing they're heads off while fixing the curtains...I mean windows/doors. Plus there's 4 player co-op campaign mode.

(Contraversial) Army of Two: 40th Day - Ok, not the best game in the world, but it's a really good co-op experience which uses the co-op gimmick in all it's game modes. Plus there's always the co-op specific actions which almost forces you to work together. Good fun.

My retro classic co-op games have to be...

Secret of Mana (SNES) - awesome 3 player co-op goodness

Super Contra - Possibly the only way to complete the game is in co-op

Smash TV - God, it was soooo much fun in it's day

I agree with the earlier comment: Top 10 co-op games of this gen. Although I must disagree and say the MW2 is nothing special for co op

You're not the only one who does look at MMORPGs like that. To be perfectly honest i don't know what they were thinking when they made that list.

I think personally my favourite co-op was the Cat and Mouse mode in the Project Gotham Racing series. I think maybe it was the novelty of having to team up in cars that lent it such appeal.

Oddly, I don't look at MMORPGs as co-op, in my experience it's more of a 'forced co-op' to see who can get the best shinies at the end of it, that competitive edge was always present.

But if we're allowing WoW, my favourite all time 'co-op' game would then be SOCOM: US Navy SEALs back when it had a thriving community of clans.

Target Renegade was the ultimate co-op - especially if both of you were using keys!

Chess isn't co-op as there's only one player per side :P

I can't believe I'm going to say this first, but Modern Warfare 2's co-op is spectacular. It's highly rewarding doing the tough missions, even after all the struggling.

I agree with Gears 2 ONLY because of Horde being awesome. ODST should win the entire thing because the campaign co-op is excellent, and Firefight is just spectacular. Good to see a shout for Borderlands, loved that game.

But most importantly.... where the balls is ToeJam and Earl 2: Panic on Funkotron?
