Neon Kelly, Deputy Editor - Rage, PC, PS3, Xbox 360

Even if you only have the vaguest of passing interests in FPS gaming, Rage should be up on your radar. After all, it's not every day that you get a new IP from the studio that gave the world Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake. id invented the genre, but how will the godfathers fare in a landscape so thoroughly dominated by Call of Duty and its peers? You'll have to wait until next week to find out, but I tell you this: there's an awful lot to talk about here - and not just because of the way it looks. Expect Rage to start an argument or two.

I'm level 45 now, meaning I've just unlocked the Civilian Anya skin, so I will probably wear that for a bit to level up my Battle Mistress medal. For a compulsive multiplayer fan, Gears of War 3 is an irresistible procedural chain of unlocks. I actually can't stop playing.

This week I've had plenty of good games with my dream team - of which Pearson is a member, obviously. Nothing quite stands out like our valiant attempt to tackle Horde on Hardcore, and over the course of an evening we managed to get all the way to the final wave, knocking back four nasty bosses and 49 waves of monsters with little difficulty. We just couldn't tackle that last boss, and slowly lost our economy and all our fortifications, including the prized Silverback. It was impossible to recover, and absolutely bloody devastating. I've not been able to pick up my controller since.

Erik Wolpaw. Sometimes I write your name down in my notebook inside the brackets of a giant pink heart because, Erik, I love you. Sometimes I'll stare unblinkingly at pictures of your lovely face until my eyes crust over with the dry, itchy feeling of love. Wolpaw is one of the primary reasons I decided to get into games journalism, and as a general rule of thumb any game he's done scriptwriting for is good enough to make me genuinely angry I didn't write it myself. He's to thank for at least half of the reasons you laughed at Portal, Portal 2, and in this case, Psychonauts. If you were reasonably acquainted with games blogs from 10 years ago you might remember Old Man Murray - a site which Wolpaw co-wrote, and helped put acerbic games writing to the foreground of the Internet. Psychonauts is a bit old these days but it's still a brilliant entry point into near-perfect comedy writing.

I'm known to get quite angry playing games, but Gears of War 3 has stepped things up a level this week, sending me into fits of seething rage; there are few things I hate more than competitive online games. This isn't ideal, because I've just made another bet with Pearson - this time I have to reach level 50 before October 14 (doing so will earn me another pint of delicious beer). I'm level 16 at the moment, and so there's still a long road ahead of me. I'm not terrible at it, but I'm not great either, and dying every thirty seconds just isn't my idea of fun. Unlike last week's bet, this one is going to require some genuine effort on my part.

The one where you're corrupted and need to reboot? Yea, that one was a pain.

What did you make of the ending? Who did you choose?

Deus Ex. Finished it Saturday morning. Adored it from top to bottom. Although that third boss sure gave me some grief. Ugh.

I know what you mean about GOW3. I'm only lvl30, but I can feel that I've reached my skill limit. I'm pretty decent at FPS only, but GOW has alway been a odd one for me. I was pretty good at other 3rd person shooters like RF:Guerrilla and Lost Planet, but neither of them have the same user base any more.

Still playing GOW3 though, even though it's a total shotgun-fest in versus or KOTH, which kills it a bit for me. Horde and Beast is still fun though.

Also playing the Battlefield 3 beta. Buggy as hell, even for a beta build (although I've seen worse), but still damn fun. Pretty challenging though as there are some amazing players who just play the same map over and over again.

FIFA 12 & little dabbles of Brutal Legend. Gears 3 hasn't been played for a couple of days, but I will soon be playing that game again.

i tired duke nukem foever I couldn't be assed with Duke Nukem forever. I got a bit further with the witcher 2 but damn that games hard just when you think I'm doing alright here the next fight you come across will generally obliterate you.

I got burnout crash, will just be a fun game to dip into every now again.

I had my first full week of OnLive. 53 hours clocked so far and I've only just dipped my toe into the 105 games in the Playback Bundle.

I wish there were a stat for watching Brag Clips and the Arena because I spend a lot of time in those watching others tackle challenges in a myriad of different ways. I also love the way you can sort the Arena to only show specific games. Want to watch everyone who's playing Borderlands right now? Sorted.

Biggest Pro: I don't need to ask 'Can I run it?' anymore.
Biggest Con: Needs a dedicated cheevo/trophy system.

Now I'm looking forward to dipping my toe into Titan Quest: Gold. Once I'm done with General Knox. And a Claptrap Revolution.

Heh, the single most important currency at VG Towers! ;)

Like Emily, I've been playing a brilliant Tim Schafer creation - this past week has been dominated by Brutal Legend, for me. From having a hankering on Monday night to giving it another go, to playing pretty much bothing else this week (excepting a very quick go on my bargain purchase of Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime). It is the exploration that has made the game truly, well...., rock for me! The world is a fantastic creation in that game, and the size is just right for quick blasts.

Which in turn has created a little bit of a dilema, concerning Rage - I just don't know what to think of the title, and cannot for the life of me decide on a preorder or not. Every time I see media, I thnk 'this won't be the sort of thing I'd like', but every time I read a description of it, suchas Msr. Kelly's above, I think 'its JUST what I would like'...!

Help? ;)
