I'd taken an extended break from Portal 2 due to work and Dark Souls, but not wanting to punish myself any more I booted up Valve's game one night this week. This game is far and away the most brilliantly designed I've played in a very long time, with the puzzles always seeming unsolvable, only for the solution to become apparent in a eureka moment. I feel I'm nearing the end now, which is both exciting and a little sad. I'm not sure I'll ever get round to playing through the co-op levels, so this will be it. I know Batman: Arkham City has dazzled critics and there are plenty of other triple-A titles still to come before Christmas, but it'll take something very special to beat Portal 2 as my game of the year.

I've been playing Dark Souls for quite a while now, but up until this week I've not had much truck with the summoning-based side of the game. Admittedly, this is partly down to the fact that I've spent most of my adventures as a walking corpse, but in truth it never really crossed my mind until last weekend. Having clawed my way out of The Depths with a decent stash of humanity, I decided to make myself available for a spot of co-op aid work.

At first, my summon sign went unnoticed. No-one, it would seem, wanted my help with the Gaping Dragon in the sewers, nor with the (intensely annoying) gargoyles on top of the Undead Parish. Then I returned to the narrow grove where the Capra Demon once lived. I plonked down my sign, and was recruited in under a minute.

If you're unfamiliar with the game, the Capra Demon is a cheap, goat-face b*stard. He's not actually that hard if you can survive the first three seconds of the fight, but usually you get snagged by his massive swords, or his accompanying attack dogs. The first time I slew him I yelled in triumph, and I had no qualms about whacking him a second time. Once summoned, I followed my anonymous companion through the fog wall, and immediately came to his aid. Between the two of us, we slew the git in less than half a minute. Then we parted ways, and I returned to my own world - happy in the knowledge that I had helped someone else to conquer the beast who had bested me so many times.

Martin Gaston, Previews Editor - Batman: Arkham City, 360

You could say I'm obsessed, but I like to think of it as dedicated. I've done all of the side missions except for the Riddler, and my progress in Riddler's Revenge is certainly not to be sniffed at - I have three stars in more than half of the missions now, which is just lovely. Right now I have just over 300 Riddler challenges complete, meaning there's about 140 left to do.

I'm at 76 per cent complete. I'm hoping I can get 100 per cent before Battlefield 3 arrives.

Emily Gera, Staff Writer – Alan Wake, Xbox 360

It's a strange feeling when you see two things you love so hard combined into something you hate even harder. I'm restarting Alan Wake after failing to finish it the first time around all thanks to a deep and unwavering apathy for all characters and things featured in it. Even the Twin Peaks-meets-X-Files combo couldn't hook me in originally, but surely with the kind of presence it had on top ten lists last year I've got to just be wrong? So far the wife seems alright. Shame about the face.

Draw Race 2 - Finally gold medaled all of Draw Race 2. Brilliant concept, brilliant fun and now that I have 100% on the single player game, the online game seems more fun.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - I should be loving this.. I WAS loving this.. But, I seem to turn it on, walk around, talk to people I have no interest in and walk around some more. I want to finish it, but can't be bothered. Shame.

Scribblenauts Remix - I stood on my hill dressed as a woman [so that nobody would recognise me]. In the pit below me were the screaming children. The rain was pouring down on them. They were wet and scared. The zombie cougar had been a problem for them until one of the girls mounted it. Then I had a problem. What could stop this girl riding a zombie cougar? Her mum? After seconds she simply ran screaming. The beast I had summoned fell in one slash of the cougars infected claws! What could I do? God! God could stop the foul beast. God now lives alone in the rainy pit while I stand proud in front of my palace atop the hill. [Still dressed as a woman]

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit - Been all over this, this week. Gallardo's at 140mph around bends. On it!

Forza 4 - which I finished all ten seasons, and traded in. The Top gear license had so much potential, but hasn't quite been fully realised in my opinion.

DR2: Off the Record - Sandbox Mode is just so much fun. Exploring every nook and cranny, finding hidden caches of weapons, piecing together the original DLC sets hidden around the game, the new theme park area, the challenges... excellent fun all round, and a welcome return to Fortune City.

The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile - I forgot all about Arcade Challenges - working my way slowly through them (then I'm gunning for your high score, Martin! ;))

... that was my gaming week past.

Crewe Alex are damn lucky to have me playing for them in FIFA 12! Seriously, they can't win without me. Sadly, I get rested for exhaustion after a maximum of three games. Also, I picked up an injury during my first league match that had me out for 3 months, and by the time I got back we were in the relegation spots. Since then, we haven't lost with me in the side, but I have also only played half the games... I have come to the conclusion that "Tactical Defending" should be renamed "Psychic AI". It doesn't play like FIFA, and may well be the best football game I have ever played. Can't wait until I get the chance to try it out online, but that will have to wait until I get somewhere to live.

I also managed to check out the start of Dead Island (Thanks VG!), and ... well, I can see why people have complaints. But, there is also a lot to like in amongst some frustrating controls. There is a definite atmosphere of "Oh crap, this is not good!" pervading the game, with it feeling much more dangerous than other zombie games manage to. I'm impressed!

Borderlands all week. I'm past playthrough 2 now so everything is level 69, but more importantly Crawmerax is level 72, so I get to farm him for nice loot. Probably until Borderlands 2 comes out.

I got to the 'What is the point of it all?" stage in Farm Town and, not discovering what it was, knocked it on the head and stopped playing. Tip for game designers: have a clearly defined goal.

After completing Arkham City without the catwoman DLC (got it on LOVEFiLM). I now feel the need to replay the whole thing in new game + after buying the DLC.

Also starting ME1 again (never finished it) so I can use that save in ME2 which I will also replay before ME3 comes out.

fm2012 started a career at Lowly southend united who knows where I will end up my current betting is on being sacked! but the beauty is this year your not just stuck to the countries and leagues you choose at the beginning so if I do become successful and fancy a crack at barca in the future it could happen, that is if I can start winning.

Payday the Heist- its every bank robbing gangster film you can think of and its ton of fun. Sit back be a dead president in your mind and shoot your way millions.

Batman Arkham City ever since I got it. Finished this morning... 3:30 in the morning, as I did say to myself at 12, one more riddle to solve and that will be it. Little be hold, finished the game couple of hours later, and now heading towards that shiny 100% stat.

All my friends are playing Arkham City. It's unfair-i'm stuck with University work. At least I've got BF3 on pre-order!

Emily, i guess it's easier for those to play if you haven't really experienced the weirdness of Twin Peaks or the X-files :D
