Valve has announced that until May 24, its acclaimed puzzle adventure title, Portal, will be available as a completely free download via Steam.

There's no strings, you just head over to Steam and download the game. It's available to PC users and via the newly launched Mac Steam client.

We can't think of a better way to build up the game's fan base ahead of this year's release of the highly anticipated sequel.

Downloaded this last night for the Mac, but have yet to play it. I have it for the PS3 version of the Orange Box, but wouldn't mind playing it again on the Mac. Plus it's free.

I have personally always found Steam to be slow. I left Portal downloading overnight because of this.

Logging into my account, I can see my original PC copies of Half-Life 2, Counter Strike etc... in my game list, but will have to wait for the Mac versions to be released before I can download them for my Mac. Why does Valve have to tease me, I can't play them on my dead PC laptop anymore.
