Mirror's Edge 2 is in production at Battlefield developer DICE, and the game's existence is regarded as general knowledge in the Stockholm dev scene, former EA free-to-play boss Ben Cousins has revealed on Twitter.

"It is general knowledge in the Stockholm dev scene that Mirror's Edge 2 is in production at DICE," he Tweeted.

The revelation follows an OXM interview with EA Games VP Patrick Soderlund in which he states DICE doesn't want to be known only as the Battlefield studio.

"The DICE guys are roughly 300 people in the Stockholm studio; not all of them are working on Battlefield things, and that's intentional, because we don't want to become a Battlefield factory," he said.

"The minute we start saying 'you're going to make a Battlefield game for the rest of your life' they're going to go some place else. So for them to make great Battlefield games there need to be other things for them to do as well. That's why we have people who move around quite a bit. And then obviously we have a boatload of people that just want to make Battlefield because they love it."

Rumours of a Mirror's Edge sequel have been circulating for years, with the project said to have stalled, before re-emerging as a Frostbite 3 title. We'd love to see a sequel so long as it sticks to its free-running roots and doesn't attempt to become too action focussed.

Open world would be suitable for a sequel. They did exhaust linear design in the last game, because there are so many mechanics you can make for running and jumping off walls.

Time trials would work the same way but on a larger scale. It would work like the point to point racing in GTAIV online, and half of the challenge would be working out a perfect route.

Mirror's Edge has so much potential for expansion because the mechanics worked so well, and character movement is basic to the majority of video games at the moment.

Yup, I'm with DancingRhino. The outdoor, running bits (Read: the demo) were fantastic. But, they throttled their own design by taking the central element of free-running away from the game. By filtering the player down a corridor it very quickly became a game of quick-time events. Then, they decided to give our runner a weapon but ask us not to use it!? Ummm, what?

I really enjoyed the crisp, stylised colours and environments. But, the game fell apart very quickly.

Open the levels up and turn it into a racing game of some kind. Make it fully networked and take tips from Motorstorm RC, or N4S: Hot Pursuit. Give the game some driving, pumping music and flashy visuals to accompany the style. Perhaps a touch of Wipeout. Let players run at the same time. Use some clever collision detection between players. Nothing that stops the runner, but something that nudges them from the optimum racing line.

Yup, there's a lot of potential in that first-person, running mechanic. They just need me to be in the boardrooms :P

Mirrors Edge was like an odd first person racer. The running parts were fantastic, but it was generally let down by poor combat and confusing indoor parts where it was easy to get lost because everything looked the same.

If they ironed out some of the faults, it could be a must-have game and unique. Here's hoping it doesn't turn out like Woffls envisions.

Can't wait for EA to turn this into an FPS and swap the clinical, white, shiny buildings for gritty, dilapidated ones because lol we're in the apocalypse now but Faith still has to deliver letters an' *****.

I liked the concept of Mirrors Edge, but didn't play it. I would love to play a sequel on a platform I own in the future though.
