15,000 gamers and counting to hold 'Valve to its promise of free, continual updates to Left 4 Dead'.
Following the announcement of Left 4 Dead 2, many members of the current Left 4 Dead community have banded together, angered that Valve is jumping to a sequel rather than release new content for the existing title.
At the time of writing over 15,000 L4D plyaers have signed up to the 'L4D2 Boycott' group on Steam.
The group is committed:
- To holding Valve to its promise of free, continual updates to Left 4 Dead in order to build and sustain the community.
- To keeping the Left 4 Dead community together in order to improve the quality of online gaming.
- To supporting the model of continual updates Valve has set forth with its staple products like Team Fortress 2.
The group believes:
- The release of Left 4 Dead 2 as a stand-alone sequel will split the communities and decrease the quality of multiplayer gaming.
- The announced content of Left 4 Dead 2 does not warrant a stand-alone, full-priced sequel and should instead become updates (free or otherwise) for Left 4 Dead.
- Left 4 Dead has not yet received the support and content which Valve has repeatedly stated will be delivered.
- The release of Left 4 Dead 2 will make Left 4 Dead an obsolete purchase and inferior piece of software after only one year since release.
The group requests:
- That Valve honour its commitment to release ongoing periodic content for Left 4 Dead.
- That Left 4 Dead 2 not be released as a stand-alone, full-priced sequel but as either a free update to Left 4 Dead or an expansion with full compatibility with basic Left 4 Dead owners.
- That Left 4 Dead owners be given discounts for Left 4 Dead 2, should it be released as premium content.
Left 4 Dead 2 is scheduled for release this November for Xbox 360 and PC. You'll find the debut trailer here.

However old versions of games always have thriving communities Gears of War, Unreal Tournament 2003, Battlefield 1942, Call of Duty to name just a few and there are so many more.
Progression is inevitable so maybe this is a little OTT.Last edited on Mon 8 June 2009 by Karlius

"WAAAAAAHHH WE WANT FREE STUFF BAAAAAAAAAAAW"
Personally, I agree that what has been announced so far basically seems like DLC. But, I trust Valve.

the L4D games are proof that graphics don't matter too much on a game - whilst the eye candy seems a little less, take a good look at the animations, quantity of on screen enemies, atmosphere of locations - personally I'd take all of this over the eye candy any day of the week.
This game doesn't need a story it plays and builds on the primal fear and a need to survive - adding a half arsed story would ruin this game.
The weapon choices are fine with a well balanced mix -again adding 30 different versions of machine guns, pistols and shotguns would take away the 'jump in and play' aspect of this game.
It's the simplicity of this game that works - while every other shooter is adding more and more weapons and ranking systems etc Valve have taken this game to it's bare bones basics and shown what is truly needed to make a game enjoyable and that is playability.

You are 100% correct with the game being cleverly based around what to shoot as well as what not to shoot, how to move as a team, what weapons to pick as a team etc.
