ArenaNet: New MMO business models still to come
Micro-transaction experimentation is 'likely'.
Alternative business models for MMOs are still to come, according to Guild Wars 2's global brand director Chris Lye.
Speaking to VideoGamer.com about whether free-to-play games will always require microtransactions to offset the lack of subscriptions, Lye stated:
"This certainly appears to be the main alternative to the subscription-based model – but even then there's a huge variety in the types of items provided.
"I think you're likely to see a lot of interesting experimentation in the area of microtransactions. By the same token I've no doubt there are other business models for MMOs that have yet to arise."
Guild Wars 2 follows in its predecessor's foot-steps by adopting a free-to-play model.
Recently SOE president John Smedley stated that free-to-play was "here to stay" after saying:
"I think it's a great trend and people used to associate free-to-play with low quality and they don't any more. They're starting to see "hey! This really is a good business model".
