Rockstar working to resolve PC GTA 4 issues
Is aware of a 'small number of fans' having problems.
The highly anticipated PC release of Grand Theft Auto IV has been met with a whole string of problems reported by players of the game on gaming forums across the internet. Problems range restrictive graphics settings even on powerful systems, texture errors, general error and installation error codes and on the whole quite poor performance.
Speaking to GTA Gaming, Rockstar said:
"We are aware that a small number of fans are having problems running GTA IV on their PCs and we would like to assure them we are working to help solve these as quickly as possible.
"We would ask anyone that is encountering difficulties to contact their local technical support helpline for advice and recommendations. These telephone numbers can be found in the game's manual.
"There is also a regularly updated technical support page available on the Rockstar Games website http://www.rockstargames.com/support/ where there are many useful faqs and information on how to resolve some common problems being encountered."
Regarding the inaccessible higher graphical settings, Rockstar has said that these have been "provided for future generations of PCs with higher specifications than are currently widely available".

The trust that I had come to invest in a thorough company as Rockstar has been totally ruined because of this!.. I dont go out to buy an expensive game, in the middle of an economical crisis to be fooled like this!.. Its plain wrong, and there should be rules against companys publicing and selling products to unknowing and loyal customers, just to fool them, without any chance of refund!
FAIL!

If I use the same settings as I currently have and enable SLI, the framerate will drop from 43 to 34 or so according to the built in benchmarking results at 1680x1050 resolution. I would prefer to be running my native resolution of 1920x1200 though... *grumble*
To get those speeds I used the auto detect settings and then lowered the rendering quality to medium (the dithered/grainy edged shadow thing looks like crap no matter what rendering quality I set). I reduce the view distance to about 25 and reduce the shadow density down to zero since the dithered shadows look like crap regardless of the settings anyway. Also, if you disable the video capture thing (F2) in the game settings, it gives me yet another small boost to performance. In the end I get a game that looks decent but not as good as I would like and the disappointment that I am unable to put the full strength of my hardware up against it.
First thing Rockstar needs to do is get the SLI support going... Many of us have SLI setups these days and it's ridiculous that if we have it enabled, the game runs SLOWER.
Second thing they need to do is either change or fix those horrible looking shadows. I mean... WHY? WHAT WERE they THINKING?! It just looks bad. They couldn't do a smoother shadow? Really? Ugh... by now you can tell how much I hate the shadows...
Third thing they need to do is enable advanced graphics controls in the settings. Give me the ability to adjust the anti-aliasing... DISABLE THE UGLY SHADOWS... tweak the settings until I can run 1920x1200 even if that means I need to turn something else down a bit to maintain higher fps rates.
In the end... I'm glad I have a quad core with a fairly powerful video card (not as powerful as I would like for this game since I could use 1gb ram instead of 512mb ram on the video for this one).
Last... but not as essential, they need to provide me a way to install this on Windows 7 beta for testing purposes and to use GTA 4 as a benchmarking tool to test speed differences.
Otherwise the game runs fine for me and works well. I just hope someone from Rockstar stumbles across this and considers my suggestions. :)
