What we've been playing this week.
Tom Orry, Editor - Rabbids 3D, 3DS
I've got a fondness for the Rabbids, especially their underappreciated platformer Rabbids Go Home, but this side-scrolling platformer for the 3DS really doesn't make use of the little guys. It's a shame that the Rabbids' quirky personalities have been shoehorned into a game as generic as this, with barely a hint of humour seen throughout. While there's nothing terribly wrong with Rabbids 3D, there's a sense that this was a game rushed out for the 3DS launch. A port of Rabbids Go Home would have been excellent, assuming the 3DS is up to the job - and I think it is. By churning out mediocre titles like this Ubisoft is risking turning off the franchise's, in many cases, rabid fans.
Neon Kelly, Deputy Editor - Grand Theft Auto IV, PC, PS3 and Xbox 360
While most of my working week has been spent in the company of Hulk Hogan and WWE All Stars, I've been using my free time to revisit Niko Bellic and chums. I know the critical adoration heaped upon GTA IV left some people bemused, particularly those who preferred the lighter tone of San Andreas, but for me this is still one of the best games of the current generation. Three years have passed since its release, and yet there's still hardly anything that can compare to its dynamic, emergent gameplay. The cross-city car chases remain particularly impressive - especially when they're the result of your own tomfoolery outside of a mission. You get into a scrap with a pedestrian, shoot the cop who turns up to investigate, and then the situation snowballs into an epic running battle against half of Liberty City. Wonderful.
Martin Gaston, Staff Writer - Call of Duty: Black Ops, Xbox 360, PS3, PC
I abandoned a Veteran run of Black Ops' campaign at the end of last year, mainly because I think I got distracted with the multiplayer and then moved on to attempting Super Meat Boy. Such is life. Returning now - after Crysis 2, Bulletstorm, Killzone 3, and Homefront - makes for some interesting points of comparison, and I've just reached the point where 'ice cube' Hudson takes a team up to the Ural Mountains - one of my favourite missions in the game.
I was spurred back to the game after it was declared the second highest-grossing title of all time in the US this week, which is absolutely staggering when you realise it hasn't even been out for six months. While I'm a big fan of what Treyarch has done to the FPS mould Infinity Ward created, my main worry now is that too many other publishers will now devote time and resources into chasing Call of Duty's shadow. Double points, however, will go to the first studio who manages to combine the jaw-dropping whizzbang of modern warfare with the thrill of rhythm-based music gameplay.
Emily Gera, Staff Writer - Rift, PC
As a rule of thumb new entries into the MMORPG genre are almost completely rubbish, so I'm happy to say that the first 10 levels of Rift actually aren't. Where most games desperately try to recreate the World of Warcraft formula Rift goes a different path and at least tries to create the illusion that it's its own game. Imagine WoW's Burning Crusade if it were covered with a tarp and had a bizarre steampunkian village planted on top of it. The game looks like an individual while basically maintaining what worked for WoW. Shame it hadn't come out 2-years earlier, considering where the genre seems to be heading these days. With both Guild Wars 2 and Old Republic taking an RPG approach to the genre, Rift seems to be happy enough to deal out a slightly more antiquated style of game. But ah well, so far so good anyway.

I've gone back to Metal Gear Solid 4. I'll keep saying this, but it really is one of the best online games for PS3.
clangod
Both incredibly engrossing games for different reasons. As much of a pain as it is, I'm enjoying tuning cars in Shift 2 but sadly lack the money and time to buy and tune everything I'd like...
Near the end of Mafia II. Really great game and for $20 one of the best scores ever. Got the Betrayal of Jimmy DLC as a bonus so will venture further into that after the main story has reached it's conclusion.

I have only just finished the main game, and f**k me, what a game, I can totally understand why a lot of the VG crew love it, I think it is probably, one of the single most engrossing games I have ever played, wanky I know, but through one of the later scenes my mouth was literally open with surprise for the entire time. What a game, I'm not 100% sure if i'll try and play through all the endings as I think it might ruin the overall experience, maybe in a couple of months. I can't say enough good things about this game, a well deserved 2010 GOTY.

I'm finally done and dusted with AC:BroHo, I finished with 100% renovation to boot.
Moved straight onto Dead Space 2 and have only reached Chapter 3 so far. I'm having to play it in small chunks at the moment, it's just too tense!

Long story short - Mass Effect 2 is amazing.

de Blob 2 - trying to find the rest of the lightbulbs before I call it a day. Thoroughly enjoyed this game.
GTA Lost and the Damned
Shift 2 - unlike others, I prefer the original but this is still a good game. Same about the morons online who think they are playing Burnout.
Lego Batman - played it on the PSP but the game is too dark for the PSP screen so had to give up. Got it on the 360 this time round and enjoying it.
Pure - came along with Batman and so far so good.
Sims 3 - only got as far as the character creation
Ridge Racer 6 - a bargain at £2.70
And Motorstorm Apocalypse is on its way.

Some l4d2 anyone who has this on steam will have noticed the new campaign is playable now tho it is a beta and certainly has a few issues to address its fun to play.

I don't usually bother playing a game for a second time after I've completed it but I must say I'm thoroughly enjoying this one.
Final Fantasy XIII - Chapter 11 started to confuse me a little when I came across an enemy that I just couldn't defeat which made me lose interest in FFXIII then after about 6-8months of it being on my stack of games untouched I decided to pick it up and try a different approach and grind and grind until I leveled up quite significantly. Enough to defeat said enemy and clear my path to Chapter 12 anyway.
I am really enjoying playing this and find I can easily put in 3 hours non stop play and feel that I've not really got too much further. I love epic gaming though. I just wish, as the FFXIII review on VG says, that this game wasn't so linear. I would have liked it to be more open worldish than what it is.
Still as I've been a FF fan since VII I'm prob a little biased in saying this game is still well worth a play through :)
Call Of Duty: Black Ops - I still have a nice blast online every now and again and find it easy to get back into after not playing for a few weeks. Very disappointed with the drop in connection when trying to play with my sister though. I hope that was just a one time thing.
Neon-Soldier32
Finished the campaign on SuperSoldier difficulty, whcih was suprisingly easy: Upgrade cloak and sneak past them all. Although, the AI doesn't react how you would hope it does to distractions and for some reason, the AI always follows you, for no reason what so ever.
Plants Vs. Zombies - I've been playing a bit more of this, this week, it's cute art style and quite funny 'main character' Dave make the game much easier to play. Normally I wouldn't be complaining about longevity in a game, but I've played PvZ for 7 hours now and I've still not finished adventure mode. I paid £6 for this. I expect a crappily long length!
Woffls
My absolute favourite part of the game was how The Strip was a closed off section of society, much like Tenpenny Tower in Fallout 3, and you had various ways of getting in that you'd pursue based on your character's attributes. You can hack the robot if you have lots of Science, of which I had very little; flash 2,000 caps for a passport, which I was nowhere near; or get a passport from Mick & Ralph, which I couldn't do because they hated me.
At this point I thought "well this is dumb, maybe it's glitched or something", but apparently you can simply wander round outside the wall, find a barracks, and get a monorail in. This was so painfully easy that it made all the other stuff seem utterly pointless. If handled properly, this could have been a great focal point for the game, but no, I just had to do some walking and get on a train.
WWE All Stars - Pretty awesome! Been playing with Wido and Ghostie5 and it's SO much fun to play with people you (sort of) know. We had an absolute blast just doing matches and it's arcadey enough that the same person won't win every time, but a lot of it is still down to skill, knowing your character, and knowing the controls.
Each wrestler actually has a class, which makes them not too dissimilar, but also they're not particularly unique once you look past the finishers and special moves. Event variety and character customisation was a let down, but you can't have everything. And my god, the bass drops when you do special moves... not bad at all :D
