Codemasters has announced that its upcoming open-world racing game FUEL has been recognised by Guinness World Records for having the largest playable environment in a console game ever.
The accolade, presented to FUEL developers Asobo Studio, was confirmed by Guinness World Records, who have verified the record for inclusion in the next Guinness World Records Gamers Edition of the best-selling guide.
Guinness World Records presented Codemasters and Asobo Studio with a certificate that officially documents:
“Largest playable area in a console game: The largest playable environment in a console game is 5,560 square miles (14,400 km²), and is featured in FUEL (Codemasters, 2009). The area features rivers, deserts, forests and mountains and was demonstrated at the offices of Guinness World Records, London, UK, on 20 May 2009.”
FUEL is scheduled for release on June 5 for Xbox 360 and PS3, with a Games for Windows LIVE version to follow at a later date.

FUEL, Star Ocean 4, Sacred 2 and Red Faction all out on the same day, I should apply to Guinness and see if I can sneak in there with 'Longest sustained period without food in order to fund a gaming addiction'.

As long as there is reason for all that area, it's good. But if most of it is just endless and featureless desert, then I'd much rather they don't bother with it.
