Gamasutra reports that Washington-based ACES Studio, the Microsoft-owned development studio responsible for the the Microsoft Flight Simulator series, has been badly affected by Microsoft's ongoing job cuts.

Development sources have told Gamasutra that that a large percentage of the studio's staff have been let go, some sources stating that the entire Flight Simulator team has been axed.

The future of one of Microsoft's longest running franchises (the first MS branded Flight Sim was released in 1982) is now uncertain, as is the development of ACES Studio's Microsoft Train Simulator 2 and Microsoft ESP, a visual simulation platform based on Flight Simulation X technology.

There is no limit to flight sim for true flight sim fans! I was looking forward to advancements in the physics of centrifugal pressure reduction and more detailed pre take off check-lists. Seriously though, its always nice to have a new title boasting better graphics and although flight sim x still looks great now, in a few years time I wonder where its fan base will turn to.

Yeah, I have to agree. Surely there comes a limit to how good a flight simulator can actually get? It's not as if (Dubai excepted) there are new tracts of the world appearing for pilots to fly around that weren't there last year, is it?

I actually think this is because there is only so far you can go with a flight simulator and don't think anything new has been on the cards for a while. It's a shame but in a time of downturn certain area's will be hit more than others.

a shame to see something like this go. Also seeing as the first was released back in 1982 it sure is a bad day.
