Despite rumours that the recently shuttered Multiverse MMO platform project would affect the release of a Firefly-themed MMO based off of the Joss Whedon television show, all is not lost.

Developer Multiverse Foundation got access to the freely-released source code for the platform, and the new team is in the process of working "full-time on the actual MMO creation platform".

They are also securing the rights to Firefly due to fan interest, Massively reports.

No word on whether a Buffy MMO is still in the works.

Hi again,

Just a note on the Buffy MMO - we have no plans to restart that project.

Hi there,
My name is Tristan Bacon, and I'm the Director of Communications at The Multiverse Foundation.
Firstly, thanks for covering the article.
Secondly, I just wanted to clear some things up. The Multiverse Foundation is a group of volunteers who were originally developers that used the Multiverse MMO Creation Platform. A lot of sites are saying that we were employees - that is not the case.
With regards to the FireFly MMO, Massively got the wrong idea when I originally contacted them: we are merely discussing the idea of doing the MMO, and are seeing whether it would be possible to get the rights. If the rights were available to us, we would then consider the feasibility.
I've just finished an interview with VentureBeat's Daniel Crawley which clears everything up, and gives a bit more background to the whole thing than Massively does. So make sure to check that out when it's published (perhaps tomorrow?)
Emily - if you have any other questions, feel free to email me at "tristan at multiversemmo dot com".
Anyone else wanting to ask any questions, please email use at "support at multiversemmo dot com".

I was skeptical about DCUO at first because it was fairly rubbish during the preview stage but I downloaded it recently and actually it's a really, really decent game. Great conceit, has one of the best intro videos I've seen in an MMO.

Iv never played an MMO I might still give DC Universe a shot now that its free to play, but if this happens i think my love of Firefly might finally be enough to suck me in. Im seeing it as a mix of Mass Effect and Red Dead Redemption lol.

Huge fan of Buffy and Firefly and all things Jossy, but blah enough with Firefly already. Let the franchises rest in peace up there on their thrones in heaven, and stop trying to drag them back down to earth.

Blah the same with 2Pac. Stop releasing new 2Pac albums, enough already. Blah!

Sorry, in a ranty mood atm. But seriously unless the Multiverse engine is 100% up to modern standards tech and gameplay wise, and unless they have top notch writers and design team working on the projects, and involvement from Joss, I'd rather not see some half-assed fan made projects based on cult classic franchises. It would only tarnish their good names, or, at the very least reopen the gaping wound in our hearts, that was made by the passing of these great shows...
