2010 a 'FIFA and CoD year'.

FIFA's arch virtual football rival PES is "struggling", EA reckons.

Why? According to EA UK boss Keith Ramsdale, it's because 2010 "is very much a FIFA and Call of Duty year".

Konami shipped more than three million copies of PES 2010 to retail before the game's launch on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Late last month ChartTrack reported that PES 2010 entered the All Formats All Prices video game chart at No.1, although it sold 39 per cent fewer copies than PES 2009 during its debut week. We gave the game a disappointing 7/10 in our review.

After the game's release, Konami general manager Peter Stone told MCV the Japanese publisher was delighted by the early success of PES 2010, and pointed to improvements made to the title over last year's effort as the reason for its strong sales.

Ramsdale, however, had this to say: "FIFA, the quality bar, again unbelievable. 91 per cent Metacritic on the two next-gen formats. 1.7 million units sold the first weekend in Europe. Extraordinary numbers.

"We've seen PES come. PES is struggling like most other non-mainstream franchises. This is very much a FIFA and Call of Duty year. There is quality product out there that is failing in the marketplace that at any other time would perform very well. So it's a tough place, but FIFA is a beneficiary of that, and we're really pleased with how FIFA's coming along.”

PES has always been a more top - quality game than FIFA and probably always will be. FIFA concentrates more on delivering a fun, arcady type experience whereas PES is the closest you'll ever get to a REAL Football game.

Coincidentally, PES 2010 released in Japan just recently and sold over 140,000 units on day one on the PS3 alone. I'd hardly call that "Struggling".

The first (Also the last) FIFA game i ever purchased was FIFA 97 on the PS1.........if i'm brutally honest, the only thing that's changed since then are the graphics.

Surely more than any other game type, football games boil down to what you as a group of mates play. For years we've played PES and until we all decide to change thats gonna remain. Honestly though 7 out of 10!!!!! it worthy on an 8 at the very least the master league is well done this year, online works and it has the champs league license and for those that complain about the lack of real team names.... it takes minutes to download an option file with everything created/corrected

Amusingly, the videogame reviews have been taken over by a bunch of FIFA fanboys - hence the low scores for PES.

The result? There are a lot of very angry customers writing into places like Amazon, pointing out that FIFA 10 is broken - especially the Management Mode. I know, I bought it. The new Master League on PES is, however, almost perfect - a quantum leap. Again, the FIFA fanboy reviewers refused to mention this.

The net result of all this is actually a good thing. People will trust the reviews a lot less next year, which is as it should be. They will make up their own minds about the demos. EA will hopefully be forced to sort out FIFA's awful player models and ball physics, on top of the broken Mngr Mode.

I play the demo every year, and it does not seem to be changing, and still seems to have this really weird play style that I cant describe. All I know is iv been advising people away from it at work ;)
