An Xbox Live Gold subscription will not be required to play online multiplayer games on Windows 10 PCs or phones, Microsoft has clarified.

Confirmation follows some confusion over whether a subscription would be required following Microsoft's announcement that it would be bringing the Xbox Live platform to Windows later this year.

The service will let developers integrate the Windows Store across Microsoft's platforms and "provide access to the vast majority of Xbox Live services currently available on Xbox One", including messaging and the option to chat with friends.

It'll also let Windows 10 players go up against Xbox One users in games that support cross-platform play, including this year's Fable Legends. Xbox One users will still require an Xbox Live Gold subscription, however, which costs £39.99 per year.

Xbox Live is due to arrive on PC alongside the launch of Windows 10 later this year.

Hang on, doesn't that just piss off all the console owners? Why do they have to pay for something I should and do get free? Are xbox owners getting angry about this stuff?

Because the last time Microsoft integrated Xbox Live into Windows, it worked oh so very well.
Cross-Platform multiplayer, etc.
Awful lot of deja vu here.
