A small team at Ubisoft Shanghai is working on a sequel to last year’s voice command-controlled real-time strategy game Tom Clancy’s EndWar.

Speaking to at the Develop conference in Brighton last week, Ubisoft creative director Michael De Plater, who worked on the game, said that while he “couldn’t put a time” on when we’re likely to see something of the follow-up, the “smaller team” in Shanghai that’s working on it is concentrating on two areas of improvement – single-player story and depth.

De Plater, who was recently relocated to Ubisoft Montpellier to work with a “a really cool team” made up of “a bunch of guys who worked on Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter”, said: “You compare it [EndWar] to World in Conflict, or Company of Heroes, where they invest a lot in the storytelling, there’s no mysteries about how we could do that and apply it in the game, it’s just something we didn’t give attention to. Giving more attention to the single-player is straightforward to address and will make the game a lot of fun.

"Changing the way the combat chain works, the paper, scissors, rock, and adding the differentiation between the three factions, again it’s not something that’s even necessarily hard to do; it’s something that we chose not to do with the accessibility. So, yeah I think it’s really easy and fun to address.

“It’s a really good position to be in, in a way. After the first one, now we have a really good understanding of what to do, and we’ve solved lots of the hardest problems, which are accessibility, camera, controls, rendering that many characters, having that game work in 3D, our online as well, having persistent campaigns, having persistent player armies, so we’ve kind of done the hard stuff. There’s a really clear path forward there.”

When asked when we might we see something from the sequel, De Plater replied: “I couldn’t put a time on it. Basically the thing is stepping back and looking at, in particular those two issues that we can address, and wait and see.”

It’s being worked on then?

“Yeah,” he said. “It’s a smaller team, and still Shanghai.”

EndWar, released in November 2008, was billed as a revolutionary console RTS that would finally solve the control issues that had stumped so many developers.

We gave the game a respectable 7/10 in our review, in which we said the “voice command solution to that perennial console RTS control conundrum works”, making EndWar “the most intuitive console RTS out there”.

Despite solid review scores, it was felt that the game wasn’t a commercial success due to the packed Christmas period and the fact the game was released at the same time as monster Xbox 360 exclusive Gears of War 2.

De Plater, however, revealed that EndWar sold 1.5 million units, and was, bar Halo Wars, “the biggest new RTS in the last four or five years”.

He said: “Even given we’re obviously saying what we did wrong and so on, it’s still one and a half million units. We still sold more than Red Alert 3, sold more than Company of Heroes, sold more than World in Conflict. It’s still, along with Halo Wars, the biggest new RTS in the last four or five years. Even with those faults it’s still up there.”

He added: “Compared to strategy games it’s really successful. We beat C&C on our first go out. We were up there and not far off Halo Wars, which is obviously a big license. We beat just about everything – everything except Halo – for the last three years that’s come out. For a strategy game that’s a huge success. For a console game that’s not such a big success.

“We’re in exactly the same position and the same sort of figures and numbers that was in Dave Jones’ presentation on Crackdown [during which it was revealed the game had sold 1.5 million units]. It’s just at break even, which isn’t that exciting. Us, Crackdown, Mirror’s Edge, we’re all in that same situation, which is in that same thing of where it is very hard to launch a new IP.”

I have had my own copy of EndWar for quite a while, but it wasn't until recently that I started playing it again and I wanted to play with a friend of mine. I don't have Xbox Live so it's not like we could both just pop-in our own copies and play each other like normal folk. So, of course the good "old-reliable" concept of the system-link came to mind. First I had to buy a second copy (my friend is broke and it was only 8 bucks for what I thought would be good times), then we had to haul an incredibly heavy box television up a flight of stairs (I spent all my money on the second copy of EndWar so a lighter second flat-screen was out of the question), set up the second system which didn't take long. The prospect of reaping the benefits of my hard work of bringing this "conflict" together was about to pay off. I was incredibly excited when the moment of power was upon us. Loading screen, Xbox main menu, Select Endwar, loading... can't you feel the tension already building? Beads of sweat were rolling down my brow (not really). My moment of conquest was finally upon myself and my lesser skilled compadre when alas... IT DIDN'T WORK.
Apparently, Tom Clancy's EndWar can be played over great distances, coast-to-coast, Bangkok to Bangladesh, East to West, North to South, but not through 8 measly feet of cable.
Tommy Boy, if you do make an exciting addition to the first version of your RTS, pretty please with sugar on top, for the less fortunate who can't afford Xbox Live and now have to face even tougher times with the raise in Netflix prices (that's another couple of paragraphs worth of complaining, but let's stay focused here Tommy) provide a system-link mode.

Hello all,i would just like to say that i know most of the good hardcore players on endwar for the xbox360 and that many of us would like to see Britain in the war and i heard that they may be doing a new british commanwealth like in the book,that would be very very sweet.also china wil be a good freinds said it would be cool to have sea battles with naval units..also we want more camos.prefebly cool green ones with differnt shades of green..sort of like s.a.s style black or royal marine kind of green or maybe desert style cammo....i have many many good idears for the sequal of endwar and i pray that some of them are on there...i also think that more units would be a big sell out in endwar..maybe make it so people can play each other of all consoles,that may solve the waiting crisis...maybe more upgrades for units too like instead of buying an upgrade for a 1 star unit you can buy one for a 2 star 3 star etc....and maybe why not end at 3 star...4 star ?5 star ? would be so great.....well what ever they do on endwar im sure it will be a great great game just like the first one.but without the mistakes..i realy think it will be top sell out...carnt wait for it to be realeased....and please make britain big players on the game lol....peace out

If your out there thanks for reading this. Some things I'd like to see resolved changed fixed or added are as follows: the games Server crashes or has issues at a much higher percentage vs. other highly played online titles out there / the ability to not only save battles but take pictures of things on the battlefield such as soldiers-units / a color selection would be nice also (customizing is a big selling point within the console group, we players may be apart of one army or faction but we may STILL want to stand out in our own way) / before a battle and within barracks I'd like to see multiple types of the same units (infantry 1 sniper specialty. 2 building clearing. / transports 1 anti air. 2 has anti tank weaponry etc.) each different group within a UNIT can be trained for more specialized fighting styles multiplying the diversity of each battle even more. / and finally yes I'm wrapping it up guys. I'd love to share money/MS points with the company . . . meaning unveil bring out unleash new and cool weapon up grades or add-ons or even different attire for our soldiers. make some of these attire choices fun like them wearing baseball uniforms with their faction on the back or cool looking "special colored" uniforms but by all means make some fun, cool, game add-ons for the next one it'll keep the title fresher longer and allow allot of people like myself to get into and stay in it longer plus you'll be able to boost profits for the brand I'm sure. I believe a number of the Rainbow Six + Ghost Recon titles use voice commands xboxlive.

I didnt/could not get use to the voice command in end war,but all in all i think it was a good game,and ther should be more made around voice commands "would like to see a FPS voice command game"
