A staggering 36.9 per cent of all Steam registered games have never been played, new research conducted by Ars Technica based on Steam user profile page information has revealed.

To put that another way, of the 781 million games registered to Steam, the data reveals that only 493 million have been played. A further 17 per cent of titles have been played for less than one hour.

24.6 per cent of games have been played for between 1 and 10 hours.

Unsurprisingly, Dota 2 is the most owned game on Steam with 25.93 million installs. It's Football Manager 2014, however, which is top of the most-played per user. It also appears that fans of Farming Simulator 2013 and Mount & Blade: Warband sink a lot of hours into the titles.

Steam is also dominated by six major titles – Dota 2, TF2, CSS, CS, Civ 5 and Skyrim - which account for around half of the total estimated 18.5 billion man-hours spent on all Steam games.

Maybe you'll think twice before going on a spending spree during the next Steam sale.

Its the same with books. I have all sorts of 'classic books' that im "going to read" but never have.
Likewise I have all these supposed 'classic games' that you have to have played to have any kudos.
For example, 'dragons dogma', is interchangeable with 'being and nothingness' for me. Its just the thing you have on your shelf to appear 'cultured' and people assume you have read. You don't deny unless asked directly of course. :(

Do you reckon there will eventually be "penguin classics video game selection"? That would be fab.

I have tens of unplayed games on my Steam list, but pretty much all of them are games from Humble Bundles, etc.

It really depends what you're into. I find that only 2 games a year get released which make me excited, and maybe 7 a year (total) which I'd consider buying, but don't get excited about. We don't get as many rich RPGs as we used to, for example.

Guilty as charged (more like 75% of my library), but I'm not ashamed of this fact. I snap up bargains, I take my time playing games, and I know that I'll get around to playing all of them at some point. The fact that I have about 50 games on my to-play list just means I don't have to buy into the "next gen" until it's dirt cheap. :D

Yep, this is me too. In my defense, a large number of them are Sam & Max episodes I haven't had the patience to start yet.

I'm guuilty of having a load of unplayed games in my list - but only because I buy them when cheap/in alpha/Kickstarter to support the developer of a really interesting idea, so that I can play them when I get a decent gaming PC/laptop that can actually run the damned titles.

Yup! sounds about right, all them Humble-Bundle games and steam sales have filled my steam library to the bursting point with games that haven't been played or even installed in many cases. I call it my "library of shame". Steam-hoarder is the right word for it I reckon, I remember a time (yes, I'm OLD!) when there'd only be ONE really good game released on one or maybe two platforms per month (at best). These days new great games are being released freaking, weekly! on like 10 different platforms or something, and for cheap too. No wonder people have so many un-played games in their libraries.
