Dead Space 1 and 2 were deemed too scary by EA after research conducted by the publisher revealed players liked the thriller elements, but were less keen on enduring the horrors alone.

"We were doing research coming out of Dead Space 1 and 2 and we're really proud of those products," EA Games' marketing boss Laura Miele told MCV. "We received feedback to understand how we can take the game out to even more consumers."

"We were hearing feedback that they love the thriller game, but it was pretty scary, and the obvious next step was that they wanted to play with someone. So we introduced co-op into the game.

"The horror of Dead Space is still all there. It's still true to its roots and no less scary, but people felt far more comfortable playing it with someone else than they did doing it on their own."

Miele likened the experience to watching a horror movie alone or with your partner.

"Personally, I would rather go to scary movie with my husband rather than sit at home with the lights out watching one on my own. We're looking for that to reach out to consumers that perhaps were not open to Dead Space 1 and 2."

Dead Space 3 will be released February 2013. Analysis

The fear for fans of the first two games is that EA will dumb down the game to such an extent that it will no longer be a horror game.

How can EA be so consistently stupid? Can they *really* believe in this nonsense they spout?

I wonder where they attained this 'feedback', for I do not recall once seeing 'too scary' as a negative point in any review.

It's like saying it's too embarassing for folks to watch porn at work, so have they put jackets and ties on all actors to make them more business like, and that they are also putting sheep in there to make it less socially awkward.

It's a double-edged sword really. On one hand I hate the way devs keep messing with the games that I enjoy and love, twisting and perverting them into something that I can no longer tolerate. On the other hand I also understand and applaud those who are willing to try something new and different...

Having said that, I am just bloody sick and tired of these mainstream companies who keeps throwing out these games that are basically soulless watered down clones of either Gears of War or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. I don't know what I hate more, these big companies, or sheep like us who keeps coming back for more.

Much like Doom 3 when it debuted.

I wonder whether the target demographic for this "research" was the same as the apparent target for the "Your Mom Hates Dead Space 2" marketing campaign... you know, seemingly below that age group actually designated by the rating system. :|

I didn't really find it scary. I found it just makes you jump alot with the dark lighting and those dam creatures appearing out of nowhere. Although my nephew is terrified of the game but his only between 10 and 11 years old so i suppose it depends on the person.

How they are gonna "water it down" then? Have Professor Genki show up when things appear to be scary?

I thought Dead Space 2 lost the fear factor with recycled moments and becoming predictable. The first one was excellent though.
