Digital buccaneers plundered 3.92 million copies of Crytek's shooter.
File-sharing blog TorrentFreak reports reports that Crysis 2 was downloaded roughly 3.92 million times last year, making it the most pirated game of 2011.
While "tens of thousands" downloaded the build of Crysis 2 that leaked online early last year, TorrentFreak claims that most pirates torrented the final version after the game's official release.
PC games dominate the site's listings, with the average title suffering three times as many downloads as their Wii and Xbox 360 counterparts. Modern Warfare 3 was the second most popular game for piratical types, clocking up 3.65 million downloads., with Battlefield 3 just behind at 3.51 million.
FIFA 12 and Portal 2 occupy the fourth and fifth slots with 3.39 and 3.24 million, respectively. Super Mario Galaxy was the most pirated Wii title (1.28 million), while Gears took first place on the Xbox 360 chart (890,000).
The PS3 didn't even get a listing, presumably due to the comparative difficulty in pirating the console's games.
EA must be wincing over these results: four of the five most pirated games are theirs, and worse still, Battlefield 3 came in behind Modern Warfare 3. Again.
