Crysis 2 will finally be updated to support DirectX 11 - with improved textures to boot - on June 27, and Crytek boss Cevat Yerli believes the jazzed up version will provide a glimpse into the future of gaming in a similar fashion to what Crysis 1 achieved back in 2007.

"Crysis 1's intention was, if I were to play it three years later, it looks great. And it does, actually, it fulfilled that," Yerli told Gamasutra.

With Crysis 2 the plan was to release a game which could be enjoyed by a wider audience, without the need for top end hardware.

"So with Crysis 2, we took a different direction, and it backfired a little bit," Yerli admitted.

And it's for this reason we're seeing a substantial update next week.

"This is much more like a gift to the high-end community," said Yerli. "And I think gamers will appreciate that. It lifts up Crysis 2 and gives a sneak peek of how PC gaming will evolve in the future, if you support a high-end preference."

The DirectX 11 update adds a host of graphical whizpokery such as tessellation and displacement mapping, HDR motion blur, parallax occlusion mapping, and much more. The aforementioned high-res textures upgrade is supported by both DX9 and DX11 builds.

Crysis 2 is available now for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. Check out what Martin thought by reading his Crysis 2 review. Alternatively check out the video review below.
