I know this is an old thread but I've only just started playing the game and I found this thread googling for Swastika, SS etc mods.
Some interesting points have been made for both sides of the arguement but the simple fact is that if one is playing a WWII game, it is reasonable to expect SS divisions, Death's Heads, Double Sig runes and Swastikas. THEY were the reason the war started in the first place! The Nazi ideology was the cause for the whole thing and to pretend otherwise is nothing more than dangerous.
The law in Germany about Swastikas is incredibly shortsighted.. do they really think a newly formed Nazi party is going to use the Swastika? Do they really think they will even call themselves National Socialists? Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it, as the old saying goes.
I am reminded of a similar case where a band named 'Death in June' were banned from Germany and Switzerland because most of their songs are connected to WWII and they use a Death's Head as their logo. The funny thing is, as pointed out by the band, they had just completed a very succesful tour of Israel with not a complaint and yet the country who actually were responsible for the Nazis and a country that got fat off the Holocaust had the nerve to ban them. hmmm....
Finally, I am playing this with Oposing Fronts... does anyone know where I can get a mod that rectifies this?
Display of the swastika is illegal in some countries, so I can understand why it wouldn't be in the game. Not sure why the States flag wouldn't be, though.
ok, realism is nice, war was 60 years ago, it is a fact that they used swastikas so, why not put it on the game?
plus swastikas mean inquerble, and are not a personification of evil ok?
its like in any game involving soviet union , would they ban the red star?
ps: the game is awesom, but it lacks the soviet and japonese armies ,
for me its always the best part
It's just Germany's way of coping with its past, it's a healing process. The Swastika isn't outright banned in Germany, it can still be used if it pertains to art or education, but because videogames aren't classed as art in Germany the symbol is banned (usually replaced with an Iron Cross or similar).
The original ban circa 50 years ago was mainly out of respect of the war's victims, but Germany also wants to prevent anything like the Nazi regime occurring again - the symbol is seen as anticonstitutional and endangering the democratic principles of Germany.
Also, facism is defined usually as a goverment system with a dictator who has absolute power, forcibly suppressing opposition. Germany is a democracy. You could call it censorship though.
Having said all that a lot of German gamers would like to see the Swastika reintroduced to games set in the appropriate period, just to add a little more realism. On the flipside, a lot of Germans still find the symbol abhorrent to look at.
Surely it is fascism to ban a symbol, no matter what it stands for, if it is fascism for Nazis to ban things about other forms of government, then Germany is fascist today, just in reverse.
Prohibiting free speech and expression to defend your own political idealogy is fascism, it does not matter if your political ideas are better than the Nazis, you are still violating freedoms and liberty.
Does anyone ban the allied symbols? The Allies commited the same amount of war crime as the Nazis with the only exception being the holocaust, if the holocaust had never happened then Nazis would of done no worse than the west.
Increase the camera zoom.
Also increase line of sight and weapon ranges. It;s silly when my guys run up close enough to throw rocks at the enemy before they start to fire.
Also, nothing is fodder. Tanks are rarely front line units. Soldiers don't typically run in the open for very long.
I want to see more soldiers practice self-preservation.
Whats the problem with the swastika? I think it's agreed that the nazis were evil but the swastika in and of itself is not. I lived in Munich until i was 17 and you can see swastikas in museums and stuff. I also dont think it'll offend the german people were the only people who take full responsibility for our history. Anyone who would be disturbed by a symbol shouldn't have access to a computer anyway
sadly it does cost authenticity however the symbol does present a meaning. I imagine its out of respect for those such as Jews. Removing the symbol takes out the political aspect of the game battle and allows those who may be sensitive to it. An even sided debate however senstivity over authenticty is priority in cencorship.
I think this game is the best game in years. Why can't people just stop getting at each other about this nazi flag lark and enjoy the game for what it is!
