Depends on the success of Champions Online.

Star Trek Online, the MMO from Atari and Cryptic, could be made free-to-play in the future, but any such move will depend on the success of Champions Online - set to become free-to-play early in 2011.

"I'm sure people are wondering whether we'll do it with Star Trek and the question is really how well it does for Champions," Cryptic boss Jack Emmert told Eurogamer.

"Does it work or doesn’t it? We're not sold one way or the other with Star Trek yet. If people want Star Trek to go free-to-play then get in and play Champions and help make it a great success, because that would send a strong message."

Emmert said that a success story similar to that of Turbine's Dungeons & Dragons for Champions would "certainly merit the discussion" of following suit with Star Trek.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

Free-to-play is becoming more widespread as publishers/studios turn to alternate models in an attempt to generate revenue from their flagging MMOs.

Should the free-to-play model turn around the fortunes of Champions Online, it seems almost certain Star Trek won't be too far behind.
