Pirates of the Caribbean and Rango director Gore Verbinski has been unable to find the backing to create a BioShock movie which remains true to the franchise, and is unwilling to pursue a family-friendly version, he told ComingSoon.net.

"I couldn't really get past anybody that would spend the money that it would take to do it and keep an R rating," he explained.

"Alternately, I wasn't really interested in pursuing a PG-13 version. Because the R rating is inherent. Little Sisters and injections and the whole thing. I just wanted to really, really make it a movie where, four days later, you're still shivering and going, 'Jesus Christ!'... It's a movie that has to be really, really scary, but you also have to create a whole underwater world, so the price tag is high. We just didn't have any takers on an R-rated movie with that price tag."

Last summer Verbinski revealed that the project was still in development, though he was working with director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to bring down the budget.

However, it would appear the pair have been unable to reduce the cost to a figure suitable for an R-rated project and with a PG-13 version a non-starter the film looks to be dead in the water.

And to be honest, I think that it is a good thing that the BioShock movie wasn't a 12+ rated. It wouldn't have worked: Little Sister's wouldn't have been as scary, Big Daddy combat a little crappy, no injecting yourself etc.

Although, with that in mind, the film probably would have been as crap regardless of wither it was rated 12+ or 18+. A part of me is very, very happy that this won't come out. People should experience the game by playing it, not watching it. And if the film was (is?) to be a prequel then viewers should have their first taste of Rapture through the game, not through 3D glasses.
