Eidos Interactive has announced the development of Battlestations: Pacific, the sequel to the well received Battlestations: Midway. The Xbox 360 and PC game is set in WWII and promises two distinct single-player campaigns.

Play as the Americans, picking up where the first game ended, and fight in the Battle of Midway to Okinawa in an attempt to secure peace in the Pacific. Players will also get to take control of the Japanese forces, commanding the Imperial Japanese fleet and the chance to fight at Pearl Harbour and change the course of history.

Players will need to plan their moves carefully and then fight in the air, above sea and underwater, taking direct control of their units.

"Battlestations: Pacific is even bigger, more authentic and innovative than ever before, taking the Battlestations franchise to the next level and allowing players to relive some of the most memorable battles in modern history, as well as gain an insight into what could have been, should Japan have gained the upper hand against the United States," said Trevor Burrows, Brand Manager at Eidos. "We have been paying great attention to our loyal online community and fan base to ensure that Battlestations: Pacific delivers the most exciting, authentic and fun Battlestations experience yet!"

In total the game will feature over 28 story missions, that's twice the size of the previous title. We're also promised 21 new units, including kamikaze and other WWII jets. For the first time the game also includes the tactical landing of troops in battle.

Eidos also notes that players will be able to join forces with friends online or play solo against the computer controlled opponents in the new Skirmish mode. The game will also feature five new competitive multiplayer modes.

There's no release date just yet, but we do have the first available screens.
