EA has announced Battlefield Play4Free, a new game in the free-to-play segment based on the maps of Battlefield 2.

From the creators of Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield Play4Free promises photo-real characters, environments, weapons and maps, signature Battlefield vehicular warfare, sandbox gameplay and 32-player online battles.

"We broke new ground in 2009 with the launch of Battlefield Heroes; a game that has 6 million registered players worldwide. Now we are complementing that arcade shooter with a core, realistic Battlefield shooter experience that fans have been clamouring for," said James Salt, senior producer, Battlefield Play4Free. "Battlefield Play4Free is for serious shooter fans who are looking for a premium - but free - experience that rivals top console titles."

The game combines the most popular maps from Battlefield 2 with the familiar classes and powerful weapons of Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and players have access to 16 vehicles including the Mil Mi-28 attack helicopter, its nemesis the F35 VTOL jet fighter, the massive Russian T-90 main battle tank, and the LSV light strike vehicle.

Battlefield Play4Free is set to go live in spring 2011. Players can also register for the closed beta at battlefield.play4free.com which launches November 30.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

The popularity of Battlefield Heroes and Battlefield 2 should pretty much guarantee Battlefield Play4Free comes out with a strong userbase.

EA's also claiming an experience to rival the "top consoles titles," which we're a little sceptical about, but we're willing to believe EA for the time being.
