DICE has released the original Battlefield 1942 as a free download in celebration of the series’ 10-year anniversary.

PC players can grab a copy of the full game, which turned 10 years old in September, over on Origin.

“When we launched Battlefield 1942 ten years ago, we had lofty ambitions to create a first-person shooter that would push the boundaries of innovation, creativity and design,” said Karl Magnus Troedsson, vice president and general manager of DICE.

“We evolved the FPS gameplay formula by introducing the world to all-out warfare via land, air and sea. Since the beginning, the reception to the Battlefield series has been incredible thanks to our amazing fans. Every day, we strive to provide our community with great games and new ways to play as evident with Battlefield 3 Premium.

“We wanted to thank our fans who have supported us throughout the years by restoring Battlefield 1942 for a digital re-release and give everyone a chance to play the game that started it all.”

Battlefield 1942 won over critics and players alike on its release for its innovative approach to online warfare. The game spawned two expansion packs and multiple sequels and spin-offs, including last year’s award-winning Battlefield 3.

As well as releasing Battlefield 1942 as a free download, EA announced today that Battlefield 3 Premium had surpassed 2 million sales worldwide.

Battlefield 3 Premium entitles members access to all of Battlefield 3’s downloadable content at no additional cost, as well as access to in-game items available exclusively through the service. The game’s next expansion pack, Battlefield 3: Aftermath, is due for release later this month.

Battlefield 4 is currently in development at DICE. If we were betting men, we’d put money on the game releasing next October.
