BioWare has “no regrets” over it’s much-loved Baldur’s Gate games, but admits it’s “frustrating” not to be able to continue to develop the characters it created for the RPG series.

Baldur’s Gate, released in 1998 for the PC and published by Interplay, was a high fantasy role-playing game based on the Dungeons & Dragons rule set. Its success spawned a sequel and a spin-off series. The final game, 2001’s expansion pack Throne of Bhaal, closed the story arc.

In August 2008, Interplay and Atari settled a long-standing dispute, giving Atari all of Interplay's previous D&D game rights, including the Baldur's Gate license.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com, vice president of entertainment and miscellaneous at BioWare, and vice president of Electronic Arts, Greg Zeschuk, said that the development of the upcoming Dragon Age: Origins, described by the company as “the spiritual successor to Baldur’s Gate” (head over to our game page for more), was in part due to BioWare’s inability to create Baldur’s Gate 3.

“The Baldur's Gate and Dungeons and Dragons property is of course controlled by Atari, and owned originally by Hasbro, so it's a complicated, convoluted way of getting there. For us it's more a function of... because we weren't in a position to do Baldur's Gate... hey well let's create our own! That's effectively what this [Dragon Age: Origins] is. It's funny, we took a page from Fallout, not Fallout 3 but Fallout 1. Fallout 1 was basically a game called Wasteland - that was the spiritual successor to Wasteland.”

When asked if BioWare would have liked to have made Baldur's 3 if it had had the opportunity, Zeschuk replied: “Maybe. The things we miss more than anything else are some of the characters we created. It's frustrating – like Minsc and some of the other characters we built over the years – not being able to continue to stem that is a bit frustrating. Though, to be fair, we feel like we closed the series.

“There are a lot of video games that – like the original Wasteland - never had a sequel, but there are a lot of games that never actually end. Whatever happens, they're left hanging and fans are like, ah I wish I'd finished it. But because we were able to finish the sequence of games in Baldur's Gate: Throne of Bhaal... it's funny, we were satisfied that we were able to deliver that entire arc. Go 'there it is and that's the story of Baldur's Gate'. We feel like we finished our work at that time.”

So no regrets then?

“No, we don't have regrets.”

In December last year then Infogrames president Phil Harrison said that Atari plans to revisit the likes of Baldur’s Gate, Dungeons & Dragons and Neverwinter Nights (originally a BioWare game), but not in the next 12 months. No mention has since been made of those games.

I would love to see a Baldur's Gate 3. Provided it has the same level of quality as the actual original games.

Joareth, please tell me you're joking. Comparing a wannabe ghetto RPG, first person shooter like fallout 3 with a top down D&D based game like Baldur's gate is insulting at best.

For those that dont know Baldurs gate dark alliance series is not the original BG series but a spin off of some sort and does not even come close to comparing to the original Baldurs Gate series. The original BG games where epic in story with a massive open ended world to explore. Everyone that like the old BG should check out Fallout 3 New Vegas it sort of has that play style like the old Baldurs Gate's, Icewind Dale's and original Fallout's 1&2, accept with a much diffrent look obviously :P

I am addicted to Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance II! Although I play the PS2 version of the game. The ending to that irritated me and instantly I wanted the next game... wahhh. But still I WANT TO SEE BALDURS GATE: DARK ALLIANCE III! BALDURS GATE REIGNS ON!

I believe Baldur's Gate never ends. Everyone can make a new story to continue this, because, games like this offer you not only a story, but a full myth. Remember the game, "Fall of Netheril", "Illefarn Empire", "Candlekeep", "Faerunian Elves and Dwarves", so many stories in a game, it's a full myth with it's own creatures and places. I played DAO, I saw the classes and I was dissapointed, 3 classes only with 2 more classes in everyone of them. In Baldur's Gate 2 I found SO MANY classes, different swords, spears, flails, morning stars, short swords, composite bows, shields for knights, helmets for knights etc. It is what I call QUALITY. And if Baldur's Gate will be made, I'd like to see it with DAO graphics and the quality as pure Baldur's Gate game.

I would give anything for there to be a Baldur's Gate 3. Baldur's Gate was an original and the only game of it's kind that succeeded in my eyes as it did.A game that i've spent countless hours on and never can get tired of. Baldur's Gate IS the game of my life and I would love to see it continue yet it seems that Baldur's Gate will die with only Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2. There will never be a game like Baldur's Gate again and i would give my little brother for Baldur's Gate 3 to be made. (for anyone who can start productions on Baldur's Gate 3 im serious ;) ) DON'T LET BALDUR'S GATE DIE!!!

These games were really fun to play. They've got to make at least one more for the PS2.

Yeah you know i totaly agree with you why don't they bring out bauldersgate dark alliance 1 and 2 out ont he ps3 or xbox but with better graphics sound etc etc so the detail is much better. I think that would be brilliant they've done that with god of war 1 and 2 and now they might be bringing out final fantasy 7 8 and 9 out on ps3 and xbox so why not bring out stuff like baulders gates, old dynasty warriors, warriors orochi's.

Somewhat harsh! But yes to prevent confusion the console versions were a Diabloesque action rpg set in the DND realms.
Whereas the PC versions were classic old school rpgs. Very good ones too! You probably could convert these (or make a third) over to a modern console using a similar control system to mass effect/drag age.

Im just adding in my 2 cents here. This is to all the ignorant console gamers who think this has anything to do with the shallow Dark Alliance action games. It doesnt.

Bioware made Baldurs Gate and Baldurs Gate II - Shadows of Amn an thier expansions. These games were never released on any console.

The level of idiocy coming from console gamers never fails to surprise me.

the first 2 where amazing but the next won't be bioware made and that may not be good. unless the new guys copy what bioware has created you will feel lost. bioware has said they finalized the series with the expansion for 2 so why make a new one. make a new game with gameplay like it but leave what bioware has created alone. no i don't want to see baldur's gate 3.
