The Xbox One has a sleek set-top box look about it, but before finalising its form Microsoft's design team created a a host of other concepts, some of which Xbox creative director Carl Ledbetter showed to an audience at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference 2013 in Houston.

"We wanted to make it simple and elegant, and we wanted it to be crafted and tailored, so it's all about quality," Ledbetter said. "Using those principles, we started to design."

A 30-person team began by sketching possible designs, with some of these built into prototype models and tested in real world situations, such as living rooms. From here the design team worked with engineers to figure out how the Xbox One's components would fit inside the case.

Only once a near-final design was set did the team "start to apply things like gloss and matte finishes," said Ledbetter.

"How does the vent pattern look? How does the brand come through the front? How do we make the font look high quality, just like the high definition televisions in people's living rooms?" he said.

In addition to many Xbox One console designs, Ledbetter revealed that over 200 controller prototype models were created.

"We found that, when people put these in their hands, could tell the difference between a 10th of a millimetre in size," he said.
