Microsoft has increased the clock speed of the Xbox One GPU from 800MHz to 853MHz, corporate vice president Marc Whitten has revealed in a podcast with Major Nelson.

The 6.62 per cent clock speed boost is a result of the Xbox One hardware finally reaching maturity, removing the need for conservative estimates.

"We've tweaked up our clock speed on our GPU from 800MHz to 853MHz," said Whitten.

He added: "It's an example of how we really get close to the final performance envelope of how the box works and really making sure we have a great product for our developers to build great games against."

In the same interview Whitten confirmed that final dev kits are now in the hands of Microsoft's partners.

Xbox One will be released in November. Analysis

Rumours of a clock speed increase have been doing the rounds for a while, and whilst the boost is slight, it does help the Xbox One edge that little bit closer to the theoretical performance of the PS4.

I just read some of these comments and oh boy how misguided some people are well there is one person making a lot of noise here.

Processor clock speeds are sand bagged all the time. This is to ensure stability and prevent overheating. When a company is releasing these processors they edge on the side of caution and sand bag the clock speeds. Now you can also over-clock the machine past the safe point of running this usually requires improved airflow and cooling options.

However as this is a new processor it would of been provided to MS at their specifications by AMD. They would give an estimated clock speed for MS engineers to work with so all developers would work to this spec. It wouldn't be until final production that the full system would be available for testing and the final stable core speed determined. The temperature difference from a 6.6% increase must of been negligible.

We have known of this change for a while so this hasn't just happened, it's just been confirmed now.

Another thing to consider is that even if MS switched out the GPU as long as it complied to the same specification for the way it works it wouldn't really affect developers all that much.

I just had to make an account to tell you how misguided you are, think about what you just said - If you take out the hardware and change it then of course the articles going to say "Xbox One has new CPU" - IF you take it out and put a NEW one in you can say its THEN been changed but it hasn't its just been "remapped" ( as quoted by Bryskye ) it hasn't been changed it has been tweaked to release the limits they put in place thinking whatever they were thinking so stop flaming, and i'll think you'll find that as of 360 Sony has been chasing microsoft and "copying" them and microsoft will now proceed to 'copy' sony on a few things so again, stop spamming misinformed facts everywhere that just doesn't apply. p.s if the xbox one is a failure of a box then why is it outselling already?

I love SONY I won't deny it! Like I also will admit that Xbox1 although it had stupid stupid restrictions had a good vision now it's like a lost puppy! They just ticking off what SONY has so every xbot fanboy feels better when they waste their money on this failure of a box! How anyone believes anything MS says anymore is beyond me! Just empty suits who don't give a ***** about the fans! I feel for all Xbox fans when they announced the TVbox1 it was so embarrassing & I'm a Sony fanboy! That says it all! What I'm saying is this article was titled in a deceitful way that makes Xbox1 seem to have extra power all of a sudden which is BS! I KNOW it now has a higher clock speed but it didn't before! Until they changed it (I'm guessing after doing the math on sonys clock speeds perhaps?) so in conclusion I know this isn't a big thing I don't actually give a ***** about the clock speed the box the controller any of it....I just disagree with what the author named this article! That's it! Call me a fanboy whatever doesn't affect my life in the slightest!! Just giving my opinion of this clusterfuc console & these articles

Damn, it's a bit difficult to try and decipher all that...

Look, it doesn't matter how they went about it.

We originally thought the Xbox One GPU was going to be clocked at 800Mhz, because that's what we were told by MS.
They've now upped the clockspeed to 853Mhz, thus is is more powerful than we originally thought.
It doesn't matter how or why. It's just a fact.

To use your car analogy, if a car manufacturer stated a new car model was going to be 300 HP when it was first revealed, but this had been upped to 320 HP by the time it was actually available to buy, then the final production model was more powerful than what was originally announced.

Just chill a bit. All you're doing is making yourself look like a rabid Sony fanboy and I'm sure you don't want that.

They have not changed the processor, they have merely tweaked it. To use your car analogy, that's pretty much like re-mapping the engine (Changing the fuel/air/emissions levels in the engine via the ECU, no changes other than software).

That is essentially what they've done.

@JPedZ yeah I never said they said more powerful than the ps4 I already know it isn't! That's public knowledge! What I'm saying is the title was "more powerful than original thought" this statement would mean it was more powerful than we estimated in the beginning but in actual fact during these final hardware tests we have now realised it is 6%more powerful!! But that's not what happened here MS changed the clock speed to compensate for this inferior machine. Like they 180 the xbox1 due to terrible pre-orders NOT for the sake of the fans!!(wake up people it's all about MONEY)

I'll give you an example-

My car has report what you heard in an article....I then swap out a part of my engine to increase the BHP to 200BHP gather your new facts & write a second article & name it "Montana03s car was faster than previously thought"-NO YOU IDIOT!! I changed it so that's why it's faster now! The correct title should be "Montana03s car has been upgraded for extra boost"

Videogamer should have named it "Microsoft *****s themselves again & does another 180 so now the xbox1 is a PLAYSTATION4 & we've nearly copied everything SONY done so please will you like us & please pay the extra cash for this eye to stare at you" that's an appropriate title!!!

It does not say "more powerful than the ps4" it says "more powerful than originally thought".

Even close to the end of a development of a console, they can tweak it. Especially in the overclocking region. I'm just waiting for the inevitable "Sony up clock speed by 54Mhz!" :P. It's all getting a bit silly now...

@Endless not really I disagree strongly! If it was thought to be more powerful than first thought that would be MS telling us it's 800MHZ max but now they've realised it can be pushed to 853MHZ then the articles title would be aptly titled!

BUT....that is not the case we wasn't led to believe it was 800MHZ & now it's pushing was 800 max now they have upgraded the clock speed by 53MHZ....meaning originally the xbox1 had 800MHZ clock speed but now after we upgraded it because we're a useless company it can now produce 853MHZ!!

There's no led to believe! We was told a fact, they changed that fact with the hardware it is not the same thing as originally believed!!

Endless@ montana03

So we were originally lead to believe the GPU clock was 800mhz, and now it's been updated to 853mhz. Sounds like a legitimate claim to be more powerful than first thought to me.

And despite scores of devs claiming the two systems are really close in power, people are still blinded by big numbers they claim to understand better than industry professionals.

For shame.

It's not MORE POWERFUL THAN ORIGINALLY THOUGHT VDEOGAMER-it was a piece of ***** now they upped the clock speed by a measly 6% because it's inferior tech to the PS4 yet costs more? Work that out? Can you title articles precisely!!
