Curve Studios, the indie team behind Stealth Inc. and Lone Survivor, believes that Xbox One's newly revealed indie support is "awesome".

"For those asking, yes, Xbox news is awesome," tweeted the studio. "Yes, we're vocal about issues with MS and if developers were not, nothing would change!"

The developer added: "We need more than just policies and ideas though, we need people working on relationships way before we get to 'dev kits' and 'stores'."

In a statement released overnight, Xbox chief product officer Marc Whitten said that Microsoft's vision "is that every person can be a creator. That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox LIVE.

"This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox LIVE."

Retail dev kit functionality and self-publishing are expected to be available within the first 12 months of launch.

Curve has been a supporter of the PS3 and PS Vita, but has never released a game on the Xbox platform.

Recent history like over 3000 Indie games currently on Live? Granted the cost of patches was ridiculous and the reversal of this seems to be a good thing. Well there are two ways to look at that.

By paying a fee it shows that you are serious about the game you are putting forward resulting in a higher quality of game, this however results in fewer games and fewer patches.

Free publishing of games means far more games on the market but with everybody and his dog making games the quality of most won't be as good and sorting the wheat from the chaff may become difficult.

How many bad games surface on mobile devices before you find a decent one.

I fear the same for the marketplace but when you do find a good game at least it can be well supported. I highly commend Sony for removing this boundary and ensuring MS follow suit.

True as that may be, I'm still not holding my breath and I'll look to recent history to guide my judgement...

Who cares why they're doing it, the important fact is that they are. Both Sony and MS are guilty of making changes off the back of each other's commercial decisions anyway.

I hate to be cynical, but, they're only doing this because Sony are.

As far as MS are concerned Minecraft "IS" the indie scene, as they proved at E3. They've done nothing to help other indie developers OR market their games!

On a more optimistic note though, I hope what I said above is utter guff and this is a result of new management!
