The only thing holding back the Xbox One from matching the sales of the PS4 is price, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter told an audience at the Game Monetization USA Summit in San Francisco.

"The reason Sony beats Microsoft is solely the price," Pachter noted. "Microsoft loses the next generation unless they cut price. If Microsoft drops its price to $399, I expect the sales to be equal to the PS4."

If PS4 continues to be the cheaper platform Pachter estimates sales of 100 to 120 million units for Sony's console, and 90 to 110 million units for the Xbox One.

It's hard to argue any different, especially given Microsoft has failed to convince consumers that Xbox One is good value for its price premium.

Great, one-post pro-one-sided wonders abound... always make for riveting discussion [/sarcasm]

I agree with Pachter one this one - cut the madatory Kinect, reduce the price in-line, *boom*.

PS4 is £349 in the UK, that's why demand is 5x that of the Xbox One. There is unsold Xbox One stock everywhere, and PS4's are impossible to lay your hands on right now (despite Sony having double the amount available).

I doubt a price match will help. The hardware spec of the Xbox One means buying that ensures you will be spending a generation in the greenhouse having stones thrown at you about putting up with inferior versions of PS4 games, and missing out on PS4 exclusives.

Patcher is an idiot if he thinks it's just about price.

Microsoft botched the launch, in addition everyone knows the XBox One is significantly lacking in horsepower, the early titles show it, the gap will only widen. That and for the last two years, Xbox owners have been looking on in envy at what PS+ owners have been getting and wondering why Microsoft has been ripping them off for the last 6 years with Xbox Live fees.

I lent a Xbox fanboy friend of mine my PS3 and the Last Of Us when I went on holiday. He has now ordered a PS4 and is amped. His Xbox friends are doing the same... It's a snowball effect. You buy the system your friends have. The early adopters have already defected. I doubt Sony lost very many users from PS3 to Xbox One, but I would love to see how many users Microsoft lost to PS4...

Still confuses me that the XB One UK launch price was same as PS3, but was $100 less in US;

PS3 - £425 & $600
XB1 - £425 & $500

Confused, but not surprised really...

the xbox one costs costs 471$$ to build. to cut the price by 100 dollars would mean they would loose 100 dollars a console. that would be ridiculous to even consider it. and to unbundle the kinect would defeat the purpose of bundling it in the first place. the console has been out for only a few weeks, give developers the chance to try something new with the kinect.

Anybody even REMOTELY connected with the hardware and features reveal or the frankly disastrous PR and marketing departments need to be very publicly fired.

Also, each Xbox One should come with a small slice of Humble Pie.

I support the kinect more games and features will come out and make things easier. If they cut price and keep kinect they will out sell ps4.

The $100 price drop without Kinect is what I'm waiting for. I just don't want Kinect at all. That thing is just bad news. First they divert CPU/GPU horsepower to it and now it seems the UI only works how it should if you use Kinect because the actual menus you need are hidden under so many other menus.

Microsoft is forcing us to buy kinect a technology that few game can take advantage from it
They chould drop it and let ppls buy what they want
499 $ is not a good price to challenge ps4
