Xbox Live man calls PS3 online service a knockoff

Xbox Live group marketing manager Aaron Greenberg has criticised Sony's online service for the PS3, calling it yet another knockoff.

Speaking to GameSpot at Sony's recent Gamers Day event, Greenberg said that Microsoft is flattered that they have "created a service that is breeding yet another knockoff."

Greenberg was questioned about the future of the Xbox Live subscription model, especially given that Sony's PS3 offering will be free of charge, but wasn't forthcoming in future plans. "We will compete with them in the same way we have for the last four years by out-innovating and focusing on community, value, and the content that gamers want," said Greenberg. "They offered basic free matchmaking on the PS2, and from what we can tell, their online story has not evolved much."

Speaking more specifically about Xbox Live, he promised that details of the upcoming autumn dashboard update will be coming "soon", and also hinted that further updates to the Xbox backwards compatibility software would be released soon - although did not offer any concrete info on the subject.

One of the new features to be included in the autumn update is the ability to output in 1080p, both for games and video content, including the HD DVD add-on. We'll bring you full details of the update as and when the information comes to light.

desert Beagle, did the PS2 dominate in the online section? Has anybody even heard of it? lol how you can say that when Sony has NO experience running a online games server is beyond me and lets face it Sony is COPYING microsoft by even HAVING one!!

Microsoft copies in some things yes but then again so does EVERYBODY and lets not forget people that Microsoft is the largest software manufacturer in the world because they INVENTED software. everone else has copied since day one. 90 PERCENT of pcs around the world run windows 90 PERCENT!!! The morons here particularly the guy calliung himself `playa` have all the intelligence of school room children.

eventhough i own a 360 and dont plan on buying a ps3, sony's console will rock as usual. ps3 can dominate if its online service works at least as well as xbox live. did i mention its free ! also the ps3 needs to avoid having too many dead systems as with the 360 in the opening months. There is a lot of ifs there but even if sony cant accomplish them, people will buy the system. Regardless i believe that after 3 or 4 years there will be more of those w/ps3s than w/360s.

I guess the George foreman grill (PS3) will overall be the most successful cause its online service is FREE. Microsoft will just copy there competitors as they have done for the past thirty years in every industry they have been involved in. Wii's online service sounds like a joke as is there console but already there are third parties developing or should I say working around Wii's Patents of there motion sensor controllers.

Microsoft stepped in the gaming industry quiet simply because there operating system was under fire when users started using linux OS on Sony's console and lets not forget the PS3 will come with the Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) as standard.

Its going to be a bumpy ride for sony. The new console is a Rip Off, and Their Online Service is what the Xbox Live marketing person said, its going to be a Knock Off. Wasnt there a online service thing for the PS2? and didnt that not going anywhere? hardly any people i know have heard of the PS2 online thing.
